Mind you I also thought you could maybe list all the books you have, and send the list to Sarah Palin and let her decide which ones to keep - she's something of an expert apparently.

(oh, I am so nasty for someone who sentimentally keeps other people's Bibles)

As to the party of the first part (the one without enough bookcases), I mentioned this to my Darling as a solution and she informed me that I already have so many bookcases we're finding it difficult to make enough space for a bed. We already gave up the sofa and living-room chairs. My dear one says that we are at our limit for bookcases, because 14 floor-ceiling bookcases is enough for 4 people. Honestly, I really think that she is determined that I'm going to have to find new homes for my literary orphans. *grins* (And this as she sits reading my Anita Blake books like they're going out of style!!!)

As to the part of the 2nd part (Ms. Palin)... I could try that. I suspect that we have rather divergent tastes, though. She might take offense to my Different Loving, my Satanic bible, and my Kant and Heinlein.... *wink*

I don't think you're nasty... ok, maybe you -are- nasty... but you're such a darling at it that agreeing with you can only be meant as a compliment. *grins*

You have my sympathy. Parting with books is like parting with well loved friends.

I gave tons of books to my kids, and donated a bunch to the Library.

I only held onto those i could not bear to part with including the Belgariad, the Mallorean, the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Darkover books, the Dragonrider books and anything by Asimov, Heinlein, Ellison or Bradbury

You can bet your life that my Heinlein, McCaffrey, Lisle, Lackey, Hamilton, my Sookie Stackhouse books, etc., aren't going anywhere. They can have my spot on the bed and I'll sleep in the bathtub before I'll send them out into the lonely cold world alone!

Plenty of space to store books under a bed...........

I think ebay might be a solution - people who pay for them are likely to look after them?

Sounds like as long as you are moving, move into a really large house and add bookshelves....lol. We collect books and although I don't anticipate us ever moving, if we did, the books would be going along.

Would that this were an option -- someday it will be. Right now, though, anything the size that you're talking about, in the area we need to live, is running around .5 to 1.5 million (3-4 bedrooms, 2000-2500 sq ft), and we can't move out of the Inner Loop until the artist graduates from her specialized school. *chuckles* Besides... I realized last night that giving away 500 books is a PERFECT excuse to go buy more as soon as we get settled again!!! [sm=book.gif]

In any case, I found 10 books yesterday that I don't really plan on reading again -- I think I wrung them dry on the once-through. 10 whole books. *grins*

Oh I can so relate to this... when I moved the most heartbreaking thing for me was having to get rid of so many of my books as well as choose which ones to bring with me and which ones to store.  I get so sad when I look at my bookcase (note the singular...sighs) here as it looks so empty.  I keep reaching for one of my much thumbed favourites and it isn't here [:(]

Excuse me...I have to go cry now [:D]

Arpig -> RE: "Manning up" for a move (10/10/2008 11:25:37 AM)

Buy the boxes and keep the books...several years ago I seriously downsized my book collection and I find myself constantly looking for some book I let go.

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: "Manning up" for a move (10/10/2008 12:19:33 PM)

when i moved to my current place, betwen me and my girls, we massed a HUGE collection of books - most were rarely read and/or we didn't want. so, i was lucky enough to donate some to pre-schools (since they were age appropriate) and most of mine to homeless shelters.

planning to move again (but not until sometime 2010) and looking at the rock collection i amassed now along with the other stuff (a bunch of candles and stuff i don't need/want anymore), i will have to hold a gargage sale. the rock stuff given to me by bands/management - i'm definitely keeping.

As someone who is rapidly running out of space to put bookcases, you have my deepest sympathy. As does Paradox, I'm a Kipling fan but don't collect his firsts.

monywildcat -> RE: "Manning up" for a move (10/10/2008 9:38:04 PM)

This thread made me cry!!!!  [:(]

When we moved from the West Coast back to the buckle of the bible belt, I had to leave almost all of my precious books behind.  I was able to sneak out the ones for the kiddos in their boxes of clothes.  The x didn't care one bit.  I still have pangs of regret whenever I think "oh I can look that up in this book right over there....oh wait, no it's gone, lost forever to me".

Reason #276 why he is the x.

Daddy mentions that I need more bookcases.  And he always gets me a book for my birthday, Christmas, and Mother's Day.  I am eagerly waiting for what Valentine's Day will bring.  [:D]  And I am slowly picking up those volumes that I left behind.
