MadAxeman -> RE: silly food names...what do they mean? (10/9/2008 11:25:25 AM)

A slightly different weirdness occurred when the Vietnamese boat people took refuge here. They went to the supermarkets and bought dog food, thinking the different pictures of happy pets on the cans were the contents.

that's where the mallows grow. a marsh mallow is a plant whose roots were ground and mixed with honey to form a treat resulting in something faintly similar to what we now call a marshmallow.
Just a random bit of trivia :)

Oh now that is just.....YUCK! It reminded me of a friend of mine that had a Vietnamese family that moved in next to him. Every night the whole family would put these hard hats on with the lights in them and they would hunt for nightcrawlers. My friend thought it was because their diets must be very high in fish so they must be using them for bait. One night he tried to ask them about where they fished, thinking that he would let them know of some local fishing holes. He was a bit confused when they said they didn't fish. He asked them why they needed all those worms. He was totally grossed out when they laughed and said "we eat".

Shit on a shingle....now there is an unappetizing and weird name for food.
