If you are ever accused of something would you prefer it in the hands of a jury of many or one judge? To enjoy the right to a jury of you peers someone must serve!
It is a civic duty!

Civic duty. I'd rather face a jury of my peers than a judge, but finding a jury that has not been tampered with through the "jury selection" process, and one that is knowledgable about the full powers of a jury is pretty much impossible. Very few citizens know anything about doctirnes of jury nullification and courts will threaten anyone in the courtroom that tries to inform them on this with contempt of court and a jail cell.

Following is a link to site, Fully Informed Jury Association. Some of the information is spot on. Being aware of our rights, and insisting on them, is an important step in the people regaining the power over government. Ooohh, what an idea, a government of, by and for the people.

If you're getting something FROM your community and government (whether it's garbage service, roads to drive on, city water piped to your home, disability checks, etc), then you need to be willing to GIVE something back to your community and government (pay your taxes, do jury duty with a good attitude and to the best of your ability, be a good neighbor, etc.)

well now.

a jury of peers means GEOGRAPHIC, which in my case, is no guarantee of going easy.   I am just passing thru with no deep connection to people of any locale.

best advice?   obey the law and keep ones mouth shut.
stay out of love triangles, do not steal.    dont draw unwanted attention to oneself.   get along with everybody- even if you hate them.

i never quite got that term "Jury of your peers". wouldn't that be people who are in the same circle as you? if using that statement at face value, shouldn't have OJ Simpson had a jury of former football athletes and actors? weren't those his "peers"? just a thought.

Oh, it's civic duty. Like most civic duties, it's a pain in the ass.

I just got my summons for jury duty about two weeks ago... orientation is in a couple days. When it came time to fill out the summons, I came to the "are you a person of good moral character" I had to honestly pause... I mean, I suppose it depends on who you ask...

Civic duty, though I have a lot of issues with how the system actually works.  Personally, I would rather put my fate in the hands of everyday people as opposed to a single judge if I ever found myself in that situation, so I would serve if chosen.

Mike,  x number of years ago, I was in trouble.  The judge told me, "geographic" which meant that county.

... luckily that ugly chapter of my life is over forever.  :-)

This thread probably rekindled his deep thoughts on the issue, but you can see his previous posts on avoiding one's civic duty here and here.

That usually only happens because the dumbass jury didn't follow their instructions.  It's not something that happens often.

Stef...if the jury doesn't follow instructions i am pretty sure it generally results in a mistrial. There are some judges that have strong opinions and they do have the power to overrule a jury.
