Archery ick.  I know a guy who said he never would use an bow and arrow to kill animinals, becuase its cruel.  He uses his 7.62x51 mm rifle

I don't hunt with a bow, because I am not skilled enough to do it.  But it's no more cruel than a firearm for those that have the skill.  .308; which is what your friend has,  is a good cartridge for taking deer.  I generally use my shotgun with slugs during modern gun season.  One of the things I like about my Mossberg 500 is it's versatility.  I have a BP .50 caliber barrel and a rifled slug barrel for it.  It can easily take game at 150 yards, which is sufficient for me.

He uses a Civilian M14 Rifle, which does not have full auto on it I think, so 7.62x51mm is the kind of bullet he uses in it The effective range on it is around 300 meters..  also I prefer using the metric terms for bullet size, because it gives the length of the bullet.  because the 0.50 bullet used in a Desert eagle is smaller then the 0.50 cal used in a Machine gun(12.7x99mm)

Yeah, it's much worse then having your intestines eaten out while you're still alive. lol. (the typical wolf or feral dog pack kill, ie nature).

lol.

Black powder here comes after rifle season which effectively means you aren't going to get a deer. Makes no sense to me.

There's a 6 pointer and a 4 pointer bedding on my land, but when people ask me for permission to hunt, my response is always "Doe permit?" You get two doe permits, use them on young, fat ones. Thereby preventing the birth of two sets of twins or triplets next year.

Trophy deer aren't good eating.

You are anthropomorphizing the deer, sfs. The pig really doesn't know what is going on, he has been domesticated.
The deer knows this contest is going on, knows it every minute of every day from his birth. He is a food animal on the food chain, not just to humans, and evolution long ago took care of any deer genes for wandering through the woods in a meditative state, unaware that something wants to eat him.

A very interesting distinction. I would rather be a deer but probably have gone through most of my life in a  meditative state.  Come to think of it she did call me a pig.

I am a hunter and a landowner.  I have yet to have a single person ask me to hunt so I don't allow it.  I charge all hunters caught with trespass.  It is a pet pieve of mine for someone to tell me that they have a "right" to hunt on my property.  Strangely enough, this has happened more than once.  Amazingly enough, they realize when the police explain it to them that since it was not them who paid 80k for the property, they have no right to be there.  Another interesting note is that it is always people from out of town who drove in from Little Rock or some other fairly large city.
Luci, if you want some venison, I should have a little to spare.  Slaveboy, I have a feeling thatyou would be a responsible enough hunter to hunt up here if you were interested.  What an interesting idea ... a CM hunting club.

tweedydaddy -> RE: Deer season! (10/12/2008 2:45:21 PM)

I feed my dogs on rabbits and hares I get with a crossbow. I have no trouble doing  half a dozen a day and there are millions of them. There are enough wild rabbits in the Uk to feed everybody. Unfortunately we are not allowed guns here without a licence from God, but he have our ways. Kill a deer in England and you risk having friends of the earth bring in coach parties to stone you.

Hey that is an interesting idea.  I generally hunt on public land; lots of it around Hot Springs.  Yeah, I don't get people that don't think they need to ask permission to hunt.  It's a pet peeve of mine too, along with hunting deer with dogs and bear baiting.

Both of which are illegal, at least here.

But people also hunt at night and out of season.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Deer season! (10/12/2008 3:42:27 PM)

It's legal to hunt with dogs here.  A few years ago, some people tried to get the practice banned.  But dog hunters raised hell about it, and they managed to keep it legal.  We had a public meeting in this county about it, and a bunch of dog hunters showed up yelling and screaming about their "heritage."  Of course that's just nonsense.  Very few states allow it, and I wish Arkansas would follow suit.  As far as I know bear baiting is illegal here, but it's legal in other states.

mistoferin -> RE: Deer season! (10/12/2008 3:51:17 PM)

It's illegal to deer hunt with dogs here....but I do use my dog for pheasant, duck and goose. I've never been to Arkansas....but a CM deer camp would be pretty cool. Just a thought though....I think our deer up this way are bigger. At least they are a lot bigger than the ones I saw in Florida. Those things looked like dogs.

If you hunters want be brave go and wrestle a bear.

That bear tries to break into my house again I'll just call my friend the forest ranger, who will come shoot it. The only thing that saved it last time was my dog scared it away. I lost her a year later and I am worried about bears.

Bear population only two hours north of Manhattan is soaring. Toddlers have been eaten, bear/automobile crashes are more common. If it comes down to a baby or a bear, I'm on the side of the baby.

Orion,

Then why not sign up for Iraq? Maybe you can bag an insurgent... same thing as hunting, just a different social framework.

I know what you mean.  Earlier today when I first saw the thread entitled "pubic shaving," I could've sworn it said "public shaving."  I thought "Oh geesh, now we have to debate whether or not it's ok to SHAVE in public?"  Scrolled by several times before I finally read it correctly[;)]..............luci

OMG I am going back there to look at that right now. I have thought it said "public" all night.

edited to add....dammit you're right!

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Deer season! (10/12/2008 9:06:06 PM)

I find hunting here in the South vastly different than in the Rockies...I never once saw feeders or tree stands or heard of dog hunting in Idaho. People probably would have torn it out and flung it down the mountain. I fail to see the point of sitting on my can waiting for them to come eat my corn. Like shooting fish in a barrel in my opinion. I'll walk 5 miles of ridge and brush any day.

Well here we have alot of hunters fall from tree stands. Many of them fall out because they are drunk....

Irishknight -> RE: Deer season! (10/13/2008 4:45:50 AM)

I like to hunt from horseback but there are always too many city folks ready to shoot my "deer" out from under me.
