Very insightful post, Lotus and I agree with most of it but I don't think I would catagorize Palin as bitchy, because were she a man, she would not be referred to in such a manner. I just said in another post that I try to use my head, follow my heart and trust my gut in my reaction to various stimuli and all three of those point me in the direction that Palin would not be on the ticket were she a man. If she would not be on the ticket were she a man, then she should not be on the ticket at all. I think she was/is necessary for the republican base. The attacks on McCain early on from such conservative publications and websites like The Weekly Standard and National Review point to how badly McCain needed to solidify support from the conservative arena. Palin has allowed republicans to cast a begrudged vote for McCain .. a vote that otherwise might have gone uncast as scores of republicans stayed home this election season. To that end, I believe she will serve the purpose for which she was chosen. In my mind, this is all about getting voters to the polls, issues and economy be damned. The ticket which is better able to accomplish that is the ticket who will take the WH. I don't think McCain will be a 'bad' president nor do I think Obama will be a 'bad' president. They do have some basic and fundamental differences, but, ultimately, I think they both are seeking to do what they believe is best for our country. Ultimately, I think they both have the potential to be 'good' presidents especially when you compare them to the current administration (and Congress!!! ) They just have differing ideas on what that is and how best to accomplish it. I know that both sides have accused the other of ambition and I'm a bit puzzled as to why that seems to be a bad thing. Ambitious people get shit done. Apathy is what leads to no where. Party lines are weird things. Sometimes I look at democrats and wonder if they have forgotten that it was the republican party which elected Lincoln and started the process to wipe out slavery. Sometimes I look at republicans and wonder if they've forgotten it was the democrats who got us to the moon. I look at both parties and don't understand how either one think they can accomplish greatness with only half the country on their side. We have so much potential, creativity, innovation and tenacity as a nation. ::sighs:: One of these days, perhaps the swords will be put down instead of drawn and we can live up to our own hype of being one of the greatest nations on the planet. Fucking Pollyanna me.
