not responding saves on reading "you're fat" to "why? don't you see we're made for each other?" responses.  i get tired of explaining the many whys i'm not compatible with someone else - one of them is quite obvious and it's clearly stated on my profile. however no one ever reads anymore.

I replied with "Both" because it seems to me that "responding" or "NOT responding to messages ..  depends on too many things to just be a cut and dry "acceptable" or "rude"
But after reading some of the stronger ( and highly entertaining ) views .. now ..
I just feel wishy washy

I voted for "both," but no response is NOT a response.  A response is a response.  No response means either (1) "I can't be bothered to respond to you" or (2) "I never got your e-mail."  No way to tell.

Yes, that is the joy of "no response."

I try to respond to everyone...

However, I'm not the most polite response.  It's probably better to get nothing from me.

Heh. Speaking of which, I was doing some reading around on the topic, and found, in some other threads on other fora, a surprising number of people who preferred to receive no response. They viewed the message as a false alarm.

I got a message back from gumdropnipples69! No way!

Wait a minute...

Nevermind.

You probably don't want to work for the pharmaceuticals industry. You'd dehydrate, or at least end up stuck to a chair.

I always try to get back to a person who has sent a message; but, when a thread has run it's course....

As long as contacts sound sincere and respectful - then yes ,  I do believe a response of some kind is in order , even if only to say no thank you .

As for the rest -  anything goes , depending on my mood  !

Depends if it is a copy and paste message that has obviously been sent to anything with a pulse...or if it is a nicely written message

I tried. The aforementioned Cunning Plan was to post the same question on a more general board, with a ton more traffic. As far as I can tell, it's a settled issue. On a board with easily 10x the volume of CM, on an off-topic forum full of dating chatter, there were 19 poll votes in a week. Two "rude" seventeen "etiquette." A fraction shy of 90%.

I'd link it here, but I forgot when starting the poll, that I had used my public Internet ID, which I would rather not "out."

I didn't vote.. So that mean i voted really?  Define rude and proper ediquette please.
I did not vote because for me it greatly varies on the email itself. I do my best to respond to most, if not all emails.
The  response equates to the "tone" of the email, and to ones profile (i do read them first before responding)
If i feel it is honest and sincere, i will respond the like. If i feel it is not, again, i use my better judgement. At times i will reply with a scartistic comment, or perhaps with no response.
Cheers!

It means you voted "there is not an acceptable answer available."

"Rude" would mean it is unacceptable to not respond to a first message on a dating site, to do such would be an insult, or at least insensitive to the sender.

"Etiquette" would mean that it is understood that receiving no response to a first message is the functional equivalent of a "no thanks," and would not reflect negatively on the recipient or sender of the message.

"Both" would basically mean one agrees with the second premise, on the basis of it being a consensus, but considers it uncivil.
