I'm a huge fan of Ahi. My friend and I often stop by the local fish monger and pick up some pretty hefty pieces, marinate them in an amazing Asian marinade, and sear them to serve with rice and a good bottle of wine.

We excitedly did this last night - it's a bit of a spiritual experience for us. We oooh and ahhh over the aroma, and we toast before taking the first bite, and then that first delicious, savory, fantastic bite. Followed by an "Oh my GOD that is good." Followed by reciting a scene from of our favorite movies (Big Night) - "This is so fucking good, I should KILL you!" (We edit it to, "I have to KILL myself!!! in a complete Italian accent).

Oh hail the Ahi. Last night was the tastiest serving ever. And then it happened. The gut wrenching, gurgling, stomach cramping rest of the night...which continued into today. She called me this morning and asked, "How did you feel last night?" When I told her I was sick all night and still sick today...she said she was, too.

Our ahi tried to kill us. Now we're afraid to eat it again.

Has anyone's favorite dinner tried to kill them? Did you ever have it again? Was it scary?! How long until you tried to eat it again? I can't live without my ahi...but then...I'm afraid I won't live if I eat it again!

Sardines and saltines... until the Stinking Sardine Spew of the late 1970's.  Never again.  NEVER.

I swore off chili for a good number of years.  And yes, it was a favorite, until the great food poisoning episode of the early 1980's.  I can't remember how many years that I refused to eat chili... but I believe it was about ten.

Earlier this year I swore off the only decent fast food burger around... the Carls Jr Six Dollar Bacon Guacamole Burger... it was not a good evening, not a good night... all night... into the next day... ughhhhh.

LOL sorry I had to laugh at your choice of words - the stinking sardine spew. I love sardines. I was raised on them. Fortunately I haven't had a sardine spew. Whew.

When I was young, our entire family had a hot dog poisoning. Even the dog. I couldn't finish mine so I fed the dog under the table. My poor mom - five kids and a dog all hurling and crying. I didn't eat another hot dog until well into adulthood, and it was a turkey dog.

But my Ahi...man, my Ahi is sacred. It's like getting food poisoning from communion at church, ya know?

Here's to healthier responses to our favorite foods...

Thanks, Cali.  I almost sprayed corn flakes and milk on my laptop and my shirt.

I should, I really should.  I just didn't expect to snort cereal tonight.  It was most unattractive, trying to keep it from spraying, laughing, trying not to dribble down my front.  Yet, somehow, I managed.  *sigh*

Well, I've had my share of bad food episodes....but get right back up on the horse again......cast iron stomach and all.....but I've never spewed the bad food......it's always been diarrhea.....ugh!

Are you sure it was the ahi and not something in the marinade?  Seems like if it was the fish, you'd have picked up on that right away....not much will hide that taste!  Sorry to hear about your dinner troubles!

It's an interesting question, because everything about the ahi said fresh fresh fresh! But the marinade, well I'm not sure what it could be - peanut oil, sesame oil, sesame seeds, wasabe, soy sauce. Both oils and the wasabe were opened for the first time just for this. Soy sauce tasted fine (put it on the rice).

It's a head-scratcher.

I got sick on pepperment schnaps once and could not stand to be near it after. Even the smell made me sick. Now I can smell it and be ok, but I have never had the desire to drink it again.

My mom got sick on scallops and never ate those again either. Maybe your body just remembers and the idea makes it act up. I hope not for your sake, because it sounds like you really enjoyed the Ahi.

Here's a link about ahi ( yellowfin tuna ) that may be helpful. The important thing to realize is that ahi, due to it's tendency to lose it's "fresh" color in a day or two, is often dyed that nice red color that everyone thinks indicates quality and freshness. In my experience, the only solution is to find a good, honest fish merchant and cultivate a good relationship with him  ( Blowing him may be a good idea ). Many will assure you that you are buying sushi grade tune, but, sadly, they fib. I don't know where you live, NV, but if there is a seafood market or waterfront shops, that's a good place to look. Buying fish , and being assured of freshness and quality, often takes more effort than other foods. But, as you know, it's worth it.

Thanks so much Cjan. You know, I didn't even consider the dying of the fish. I remember not too long ago, a fish monger said the salmon was died to keep its pretty pink color and I was appalled! Sheesh, of course ahi is probably dyed, too - that's just gross!

I've purchased ahi from Whole Foods before without any issue, but it's been much more pricey. I think I'll pay the extra money from now on and spare my insides!

Thanks for the link and for the dye reminder. That's probably the issue. Wow.

PS: Not opposed to blowing the monger, but would that make me a blowfish??

I'd forgotten about Whole Foods since we don't have one here where I'm living now, but, when I lived in Miami, I could always be sure of quality fish and meat at Whole Foods. yes, it does cost more but, imo, it's worth it.

At WF you don't even have to blow anybody, but I figure you owe me one.

Pea soup.  It was really good pea soup, too.  Didn't go near the stuff for years.  Actually, the soup was not what made me sick, I had one of those virus things, but the experience was so memorable, no soup for me!

My aunts homemade bar cookies called chippy dippy squares. It was not the cookies that made me sick, have no idea what actually did it, big holiday family gathering and I was the only one that got sick. BUT, it was the chippy dippy squares that I could taste and smell on the return trip. I still cannot eat anything remotely similar to them, and it's been over 30 years.

Also, last year I think, I ate some canned tomatoes that had been opened, left in the can in the fridge for 4 days, then only heated enough to eat again. Bad idea, bad bad idea.

When I was 13 or so, our family had Chinese food.  Not the real stuff (this was small town Ohio), but the fake Chun-King stuff.  Including egg rolls.

Now, I probably just had a virus (I was the only one affected), but I held several services at the porcelain altar, rendering up what was due.  I didn't eat Chinese for at least 10 years.

Lasagna.

*SHUDDER*

Now, I used to love the stuff. With the right cheese, it's great, but, my mom was a bit of an experimentor, ya see?

I think I was 10-12 when it happened, but, my mother had used a mix of cottage cheese and ricotta in it, and both make me sick.
I tried desperately to eat it, beacuse my father was a prick, but I ended up vomiting it all over my dinner plate.

It would have been fine, but my father demanded I eat it, and the vomit or I wouldn't sleep. Shoved my face in it and whatnot.
Mom obviously saved the day... But.... Ugh.

Just... I just can't look at it without picturing vomit on the plate.
