Vendaval -> College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 3:33:54 PM)

The economic recession is hitting everyone, especially those on fixed incomes.  A new trend at food banks is more college students showing up for basic food supplies.  Some are single, some are married and/or parents and they all need a bit of help to get through their programs. One particular food bank in this article is operated by and for college students.  Food banks and coops are a great way to pool resources and make the most of your money and sweat equity.

"Undergrads on the Bread Line"
By Laura FitzpatrickMonday, Oct. 06, 2008 " "At first, I was like, 'Oh, man, I hope no one sees me here, it's embarrassing,'" says Jessica Makolin, 21, an advertising major who will graduate from Michigan State in December. Makolin says she eventually grew more comfortable patronizing Michigan State's Student Food Bank, the only food bank in the nation run for students by students. The Lansing organization experienced a nearly 15% increase in traffic this past school year, with the number of visits topping out at more than 4,000 in 2007-2008. Students' need for food assistance is on the rise around the country. For example, at Texas Women's University in Denton, the food pantry for students noted a sharp increase in customers during the summer session; meanwhile, a Seattle food bank near the University of Washington has seen about a 25% increase in students' visits compared to the previous calendar year, and demand for the food assistance program at the Community College of Denver has doubled in the last year."

It IS embarrassing to be seen at one of those.

It is also bad to be kicked out of one too....  [due to living in the wrong district.]

there's NOTHING embarrassing about not wanting to starve! wayyyyyyyyy to many people let their pride get in the way of their common sense, even it when it comes to taking care of their own basic needs!

Tuition was already skyrocketing out of control before we went into a recession.  Now it's just obscene.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 4:20:53 PM)

I think my tuition is pretty alright. Granted I don't eat like royalty or drive a bentley, but I am alright. I invite friends over for noms, and it fun

PanthersMom -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 4:54:41 PM)

it's not uncommon at the food pantry at our church to meet folks who say they'd never believed they'd be here.   in this economy so many people are hurting who never have needed help before.  our church is signing up more people every month.  single people, moms with kids, whole families where they're multigenerational people in the same household.  here a family of 6 can make about 53k a year and still qualify for help.  that says alot about how things are now.  i don't see it getting any better before it gets worse.  i've encouraged everyone i know to donate whenever they can; you never know when it could be someone you know who needs the help.

2 years ago- I bumped into Aunt Deloris -  we both were very embarrassed.  She told me she was there to help with the coat drive.  I coulnt act like I did not see her because it is a small town.

Oh well.  I dont need to go to any food bank these days. A surplus grocer opened- and I go to Aldis.

corysub -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 5:16:47 PM)

Obviously, it's hard for lots of people to make ends meet these days.  Students have been working their way through school forever...and mustard and ketchup sandwhiches were a staple when I was a kid.  Thankfully, the problem is not as widespread, however, as the news headlines since only about 150 students apparently go to the Seattle based food pantry out of 35,000 plus students on campus.

Somehow, when I see the picture of a healthy 20 year old kid on line to get peanut butter sandwiches, it doesn't tug at my heart the way it does when I see a single mom with a baby over her shoulder or living in a car, men who are down on their luck with no chance of jobs (yea, I cooked for a food shelter and understand the politics of ( money being made in poverty programs by buereaucrats and businesses that leach of the programs) or a family whose dad lost his job to foreign competition.

Most of us worked our way through school..worked in the cafeteria, library or in town. That's what you do when your young and don't have coupons to clip from the trust fund.

When my friends were in college, I would often go with them to wedding receptions as crashers so that they could eat.  I was overwhelmed by bills so we were in the same fix ....no food.  College students have begged at fast food joints at closing time for years for the leftovers.
This is no new thing.

And, for the record, Jewish weddings have the best food and tend to be less likely to ask who you are.

The college guy living in my house has no problem downing down a half gallon of my expensive organic chocolate milk and organic oj.  I am his food bank.

SummerWind -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 8:46:56 PM)

What happened to the "good old days" when we paid off the cafeteria workers with weed and other assorted items to have surplus food made available on Sunday evenings at 8pm behind the dumpster in the back parking lot.  Kids are so soft nowadays......

Since 1985 college fees in US have increased 439%. US middle class wages have been stagnant. Government subsidized loans and ease of getting a loan have greatly contributed to the fee increase. It is good to see students to have survival skills how to access community resources. Where are all college fees going? For example, Washington State University president salary is more than two times Washington State governess salary and football coach earns twice the university president.

awmslave -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 9:03:46 PM)

In addition:
The prices of college level books are total scam: books with real cost a few dollars are sold for hundred.  This is where some kind of intervention is needed.

TheHeretic -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 9:08:30 PM)

Isn't the starving student a cliche'?

Thanks for the reminder, Ven.  We tend to keep an overstocked pantry, and twice a year, anthing within three months of expiration goes to a local resource center.  It's time.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: College undergrads hitting food banks (10/13/2008 10:58:36 PM)

I lived on Ramen noodles, bologna sandwiches (cheapest bologna, bread, and mustard avaliable), Mac and cheese (also the cheap, generic, store brand), and Pabst Blue Ribbon in college.

I have a 4 year degree.  Class of 84.  When I hit college, the local community college had gone up to $18 a credit hour.
we had classes in temporary buildings.   had to walk thru concerts to get to the next class.

Man those were GREAT DAYS!

General reply - it's funny how older generations always go on about how mollycoddled the newer generations are, and how much harder it was for them, how they had to rough it up and eat dirt and sleep under bridges. It's a non-ending cycle: we were better, stronger and faster than you wimpy young 'uns. I wonder why we idealise our youths so much...
