Wight -> Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 5:26:00 AM)

I was wondering, who's responsible for the profile edit screen NOT allowing pasted text in the input box for our profile text? Because we really should all have to write in a few-line tall microbox -- no, I wrote mine in notepad where I could see it all. But unlike *EVERY* other damn form on the internet, this site opted to implement security settings where I can't paste. And, while firefox (my browser) offers a redirect to a page explaining how to set my prefs.js file to allow such pasting/posting, I followed those steps, a few times over -- I allowed the site as they suggested and even the site *and* exact page -- none of it worked...

So, I have new profile text, but can't list it. I'm just curious what piddleshit web designer on this site deserves hate mail. Security? How could a post of profile text really compromise the site? Hopefully you were smart enough to block javascript, etc, I'm not even trying that. I just wanted to use a real text editor to compose more than 3 lines or so, all that dink-ass window would allow. Now? I'm finding I wrote it all for nothing. So someone deserves a lil' rebuke about their notions of "security"...  I just wanna know *who*...

Hint:  Though you cannot "cut and paste", I found that dragging and dropping highlighted text from Word works just fine.

Edited to add:

While I do understand your frustration, the idea of "rebuking" someone kind enough to provide a free service seems a bit... ungrateful.

I just tried this and it worked.  I wrote something in my email program and had no problem cutting and pasting to my cm profile.

If that doesn't work try using the keys instead of the cut and paste shortcut.

Cntrl + C to copy
Cntrl+ V to paste.

you mean their security measures are so badass they also keep you from looking at notepad while typing what's written on it into your profile? man these guys are geniuses.

i can paste into mine though ^_^

Um, probably the one who makes six figures doing it.

Oh wait, it's a free site, and they volunteer.

i just tried it out of Word - and could cut and paste...

Wight -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 5:49:43 AM)

Wow, such life in the forums. I stubbornly retried -- I finally got it working. Not sure how. prefs.js vs users.js settings -- guess I hit the wrong file.

As to those thinking "it's a free site -- so who cares" -- really, die -- free doesn't mean something shouldn't live up to quality standards. As to me finding the wrong file/misediting? Not sure if I did or not. Ultimately I noted one file kept reverting to prior settings, collarme.org (where did it get that, it's .com -- sigh) -- but once I searched 'collarme.org" in a basic windows search of the main firefox folder I turned up *several* matches, the file that was altering back and a few others -- altered the file it was reading from and voila, it took the .com version and pasting was then allowed.

Pondered killing this post, but I see no such option. I see life to the responses. I see idiots responding, thinking "free' excuses stupidty. There's *NO REASON* to do a security blackout of pasted text into a profile. Javascript should be blocked, but christ, I wrote my own web portal as a hobby. It's NOT that hard to strip javascript from someone's input. If the site designers (or so-called-designers) think it is they oughta pay me ot start working with them. I'd even "invent" the options to edit or kill posts, since I just can't see them at present. Maybe I'm blind...

Bottom line, firefox users, try pasting. It won't let you. Follow the instructions. Note, if it still gives you grief after, profiles.js and users.js both need to say collarme.com -- not org or whatever else. It's fixable. If I just blew an hour of my life to prove that, over pasted text somehow risking the security of the site. If any of the CM site designers would be kind enough to humor me by giving an explanation of how this whole universe can unravel over a goddamn paste, I'd be quite amused to hear *why* I had to blow the past hour figuring stuff out...

Whatever. Yes, it's free. No, that's no excuse for crappy site design. Have pride in what you create. I'd shit in a box and sell it on ebay if someone would pay a hundred dollars for it. But likewise, I'd want that ebay buyer to have my best of turds... Call it work-ethic or something. Don't care what you call it. But if you'll pretend to design a site, why? Do it -- or don't do it. Pasting profile text won't make the world end. Security lockouts there are just idiotic. Warcraft, my bank, etc, never had such a pesky form. CM, you're full of shit on this point. Hugs tho.

Ctrl C and Ctrl V
It's very basic PC knowledge really.
Maybe you could consider posting an apology to the 'piddleshit' web designer you called out for your own lack of common sense?

Don't you think you're over-reacting just a bit?

Cut and paste from word to email, then cut and paste from email to the profile.  Problem solved.

kittinSol -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 6:00:07 AM)

Good luck with the rest of that.

Wight:

Funny thing about posting.  Anyone who reads your profile can click an icon and read your forum posts.  Also, many more people read threads than post on them.  How many people will trust you with their health and life if it only takes browser silliness to set you into orbit?  Lack of self-control doesn't mix well with BDSM.

I know people who will die soon.  Your suggestion that I join them because I disagree with your post is, well, very Ancient Egyptian of you.

Good luck.  With that sunny disposition, you're going to need it.

puppen -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 6:03:06 AM)

Odd, I use firefox and can cut and paste all day.

[8|]

And I always build my ranty profile outside of collarme first.

Die? I'm not sure if I read that right or not but real uncool if so.
Anywhoo.... I'm positive if you emailed on the other side to the cm support team just like you posted here, they'd be more than delighted to help you.
I know when I ran a free site, I was just waiting breathlessly for the users who for some reason seemed to think I owed them something to just email me and complain about it.
Good luck with that [8D]

apiercedkitty -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 6:05:24 AM)

Actually, i'd be surprised if he actually found the post again - what with it moving and all if he had such a hard time cutting and pasting...[;)]

Welcome. This should be funny, for however long it lasts.

puppen get a life and find something better to do with your day.

beargonewild -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 7:42:02 AM)

~FR~

Oh hell....you have to really wonder about a person's mental condition who loses their temper over not properly cutting and pasting, yet claim to be proficient in computer tech. It's amazing that many of us who are, quote: "full of shit," unquote are able to do this and have no problem. Funny thing is, I use Firefox and still can cut and paste when need to.

Dnomyar -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 7:43:55 AM)

bear I use subs to do that for me.

beargonewild -> RE: Curious - Profile Edits (10/14/2008 7:45:32 AM)

Some of us aren't as lucky as you Ray!
