Today i made my very first flogger. i got all motivated after seeing some instructions on how to make one, but i already had an idea on how to do it. So, (don't laugh), i made one out of denim..LMAO!! i wanted to see if i could do it first and didn't want to mess up leather on my first try. So i used a pair of jeans that i never wear anymore and got a wooden dowel (did i spell that right) and some furniture tacks and made one. To my surprise, it came out really really good for my first try. i can't wait to see how denim feels. i need to take a pic to show you all. i'll get one up tomorrow so you can see. i'm just so excited that i made one. Has anyone ever made one out of denim? how does it feel? or any other material other than leather or rubber?

greetings, no nuts 4 this
honey....
makes me swet to ,just think ,about it ,and,YES:
dowel IS spelt funny in the hardware stores(EITHER THEY ARE, NOT ALL SMART OR WE DONT FREQUENT THE HARDWARE- STORES)
ok
.... it must look really pretty !!, and i wish i couild make one ,too but ,i'd be worried the furniture-tacs would come apart first-hit ,however ,i recall the time i had to look for my own branch to take my punishment and it was on the back of my legs ;bruised, for weeks ,too many embarrassing questions from people, about where i got the bruises too, when i had to go to the beach,..so....
it was such an agonizing whole long suffering process dealing with my own first date, with flogging ....that
i guess - i would'nt be making any such related apparatus but ,
that must be why you're the top and i must be the bottom

a picture is nice....

I have to admit, i've never made a flogger from denim. However it is in interesting idea that i just might try.

Braided rope can make a great flogger. You can unbraid it a little, or a lot. The pull chains from a lamp can also make an interesting flogger. I've seen rabbit fur floggers, but also have heard that they wear out quickly. Sir has a beaver fur flogger. Everyone who uses it says they want one too. Yarn might make a sensual soft flogger. Just use your imagination and i'm sure you can come up with all sorts of things that could be made into a flogger.

The braided rope idea sounds cool too. i'm sure that denim wont last too long either because it can fray (did i spell that right). What i did was starch each tail. OMG did this took forever, but i wanted to add some crispness the tails and seal them a liitle to they hold up better with use. They actually are better with starch than without. i gotta get that pic up today.

Below is the email i sent GeneGG on how i made the denim flogger in case anyone is curious.

Well, i kinda winged it and to my surprise it it came out very well. Here's how i did it.

i went to Lowes and bought 3/4 inch dowel and had it cut into as many 9 inch pieces as i could. Then i bought some upholstery tacks (the decorative rounded ones in brass). i took a pair of old jeans and used one leg, front and back. i cut the leg off at the top of the thigh and cut it open to make one big piece. Then i cut that piece in half (length wise) because i needed to remove the big seams on the inside and outside leg. So i now have 2 pieces (seams removed) that are about 11 inches in width and 28 inches in legnth.

When i first made this flogger i made it with a 6" handle (too short) and had to re-do it with a 9" handle. So it would be better to use a regular length pant leg (if you use a pair of jeans). If not, then i'd say at least 31" L of denim material.

So then i cut strips in the denim all the way up but leaving 6" to cover the handle. It's hard to cut the denim because it frays (did i spell that right) easily. So it took me some time to make sure each strip was a good clean cut. Once i finished with both pieces, i had about a total of 45 1/4" in width (a little over 1/4") tails.

i then took both pieces and layed them on top of each other. i took a strip of denim to make a handle and placed it on the top of the dowel to cover the wood. i placed the dowel on the uncut portion of the denim and rolled it up and secured it with a piece of tape because i used the jean pocket as the handle cover (real cute, lol!). i had to trim the pocket a little to fit so there wasn't too much fabric overlapping and then i secured it with a row of brass tacks.

Now after i did all of this i realized that the tails were very soft and i wanted stiffer tails. So after i had already rolled it up i then starched each tail and ironed it to give it a stiffer feel. i personally like the starched tails better. i guess you could starch one tail before rolling it up to see it you prefer harder denim or softer denim. Starching it before you roll it would save alot of time.

I have floggers made from shoe-strings, beaded chain (the kind that you pull to turn on your ceiling fan) monofilament fishing line and braided human hair. They all have a different feel and sound when in use.......and so does the one on the receiving end.

Congratulations on your first flogger! I know from experience that the first one is a daunting proposition. Now you'll have all kinds of ideas on improving your future projects. When I was beginning, I did a lot of looking at how others built their floggers for ideas.

I make a lot of floggers myself. And while furniture tacks will do for very lightweight tails, if you get into heavyish leather tails, tacks or even nails will be prone to coming out. I use wood or sheet metal countersink screws. Predrill holes and wax the screw for use in a wood handle, and it's super sturdy. It's really embarassing to have the tails fall off of a flogger that you're all proud of. Especially if it happens at a party.

Another consideration you'll want to think about in the near future is counterweighting. A balanced flogger is far more comfortable to swing. It's possible to drill a hole into the handle end of a dowel and put lead in it. Better yet is to use some sort of tubing. Most big name floggers use PVC. I use 6061 aluminum tubing because I can pour molten lead into it. Otherwise, you'll need to use lead shot mixed with some sort of epoxy. If you melt lead, remember to wear a respirator and do it outside to minimize exposure to fumes.

I have pictures of some of my work in my profile if you're curious, or if you're in the Bay Area, Mr S. has 6 Sincrafters floggers in stock. And yes, I'm always happy to share techniques with fellow leather crafters.

Frugaldomme.com has TONS AND TONS of ideas and instructions like this.

I've made one with nylon rope with knot covers that are little yellow stuffed happy faces. I'll post a picture when I'm done it's hysterical. There are tons of pervables that can be found in your local hardware store, walmart, craft store or fabric shop.
