"Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper, the first major world leader to face voters since the global financial meltdown, led his Conservative party to victory in yesterday’s election but was forecast to fall short of a majority in parliament."

So what does this mean?  Was he re-elected?  Does 'conservative' mean the same thing in Canada as it does in the US?

Conservative in Canada is a lot different in the US and government is a lot different than the US.

In our system, the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of government are separated. In Canada, there is a separated judicial branch but the Executive branch of government is created by the legislature. So Harper's government will be a minority government that can only stand as long as the government can rely on the other parties in Parliament to not call for a no confidence vote over issues that are not winnable. Conservatives have secured 143 of the 308 seats in the House of Commons, a gain of 16 seats

The Liberal party lost the most, as they appeared to call for increases in taxes in a year when there was an economic meltdown.

In this situation, they will probably won't overreach like the neoconservatives did under Bush.

Firstly I'm impressed you found out what is happening in Canada by visiting the obscure waleonline

Secondly why didn't the election take a million years like the US one is?

Because we know how to do an election right...you will notice there is no Supreme Court (yes we have one of those as well) challenges to the results. 5 weeks is plenty long enough...as well our party leaders are in the public eye all the time, so most of the skeletons have already been shaken from the closets long before election time.

Im glad its over, we knew harper would win, ... but its still a minority government, so too much harm shouldnt happen, Ill give it two years tops.  Id feel sorry for Dion, but he is his own worst enemy.
Im so sick of elections right now, it would drive me batshit to have to go thru what the US has to.
