UK unemployment has reached 1.8 million with the biggest increase since the recession of 1991. It is forecasted to be over 2 million by Christmas, as more and more firms lay off personnel.

But! Never fear! The leader has made it known that all these people will come in handy to install roof cavity insulation for his "strong action" on heating costs. (The same strong action that ruled out any action on profiteering by the energy companies).

One would hope that these would be jobs at something above minimum wage - rather than employment for benefits as the government has been talking about recently in their benefit reform ideas.

One would hope that the future doesnt consist of all of us, (except those animals that are more equal of course), working for the government dole on government projects, but hey - just like Thunderbirds, I get the idea that anything can happen!

Caffiene, it's the answer.
I prescribe a buttered criossant and a cup of coffee
failing that, tea and toast, marmalade optional.
But you are lovely when your angry!

True enough Seeks - when one considers the bulk of the population, the notion of their enslavement troubles one less than it might were they worth anything more than condemnation.

Trouble is, like an epidemic disease, this will strike just as many worthwhile people as it will the littering, spitting, case of beer a day in front of the Playstation people.

Anyway - I'm on a new thing Seeks; its called soapbox. Depending on the size of the soapbox, you can get quite high.

LE, I got a chuckle out of the title. EMPLOYMENT is up, I was hoping you were as sarcastic as I, but oh well.

In the US we have a public works program, it's call the highway system. How it works is quite simple, build the roads poorly and fix them poorly every year. Planning and foresight have helped this plan along quite well.

They put half of the infrastructure under the roads so they have to tear them up as the pipes and whatnot corrode and need to be replaced. They tell the people that here in the NE US the water seeps in and freezes and causes these problems, but I know the truth. When there is a crack in the road and water gets in and freezes it does not make a square hole.

In fact it is so good in Ohio that we think of the orange cones as the state flower, the barrells as the state tree and the "CONSTRUCTION AHEAD" signs as the state flag. Some are considering the adoption of the sound of a jackhammer as the state anthem as well.

And the trickle down theory is working well. The traffic jams caused increases gasoline sales, makes people keep the car full of coolant and spurs many on to keep the air conditioning in top shape. It increases cellphone use and plenty of other things as well.

Perhaps such a plan could work for the UK, just make your roads out of paper mache', it seems to be what they use here. There are jobs, and taxes. Things coundn't be better.
