DedicatedDom40 -> William F. Buckley's son voting for Obama (10/15/2008 10:22:49 PM)

And he ends up leaving the National Review, the conservative magazine his father started. Thank God the old man isn't alive to see that.  He also mentions fellow conservative columnist Kathleen Parker's bout with hate mail after her anti-Palin column.

Buckleys words:

"While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for. Eight years of “conservative” government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case.

So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven’t left the Republican Party. It left me. "

My, how the earth continues to jolt underneath the right wing.

Hell just froze over.

Still having trouble getting my head around this. Chris Buckley owns 1/4 or so of the NR and they fired him? Isn't that going to make for some interesting board meetings.

I guess "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"...unless the tree is planted on a cliff!  I believe in his younger days  his dad would have stayed the course and worked to change the party back to core conservative principles that were abandoned in recent years rather than flip. I feel the same way about the GOP but it only means there is a lot of work to do, and McCain/Palin is only the beginning.

DomKen -> RE: William F. Buckley's son voting for Obama (10/15/2008 10:49:18 PM)

I doubt Chris Buckley has really stopped being a conservative in his father's mold. The GOP has moved so far from that ideal that the intellectual leaders of the conservative movement are unable to support the republican party anymore.

corysub -> RE: William F. Buckley's son voting for Obama (10/15/2008 11:47:27 PM)

I think you may be right...certainly about the party leaving the conservatives.  The GOP needs an infustion of young turks...and I think we are starting to see the begining of that movement.

In 20 years from now perhaps

The GOP has markedly declined in the amount of voter registration among the youth in the last decade. Their drive to recruit young people sparked their success over the years.... young republicans are not a force anymore on campuses across the country... it is Obama's turn... and what you see is a backlash against the corruption in the GOP. I am not saying that the dems are not corrupt... just saying the GOP has had too much power for the last 16 years that they have really controlled the congress for the most part.

We are going to hopefully see some New Deal politics.... perhaps some "Trust Busting"

DarkSteven -> RE: William F. Buckley's son voting for Obama (10/16/2008 7:29:20 AM)

Reagan has defined the GOP for decades.  Bush has redefined it - the party of torture, horribly executed wars, bad economics, lies, and curtailed individual freedom.  And massive deficit spending.

The GOP is badly in need of self-reflection and redefinition into something better.  Perhaps the fiscal conservatism and decentralized government that it stood for classically?

The Dems as well need to do this.  But after eight years of nightmare, they only need to be that party that Bush did not belong to, and they'll get elected.  Hopefully they'll redefine themselves soon.

And don't forget government intervention. Anyone remember Terry Schiavo?

Cory,do you understand the final tipping point for the son of a conservative icon was McCain's irresponsible and cynical selection of Palin as his running-mate....or has this fact escaped you,like so many others seem to do.He is following his conscious and putting his Country First....by voting Obama and IMO his father would be proud of him for doing so!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the selection of fundamentalist Palin was the proverbial "last straw". McCain thought he needed a God candidate as his co-pilot. Both Buckley's saw that differently, and probably the country will as well.

From http://opinion.latimes.com/opinionla/2008/10/christopher-b-1.html

"William F. Buckley, who died last February, was no fan of George W. Bush, whom he didn't regard as a true conservative, and toward the end of his life he seemed deeply dismayed by the influence of the evangelical movement over the Republican Party. Christopher Buckley, who says he was once genuinely fond of John McCain, switched over to Obama in part out of disgust at the way McCain has conducted his campaign, but largely because of his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. "What on earth can [McCain] have been thinking?" Buckley wrote."

I guess if Sarah had gone to Yale, Harvard, or any of the Ivy's...I guess if Sarah spoke more like those beautiful people on TV instead of a midwestern woman, if she had aborted her baby, had a husband who cheated on her with a girl her daughters age, she would be welcomed with open arms as "one of the girls"...
I hear all of these personal attacks on this woman who has achieved the American dream times ten, a woman with a lot more executive experience than the man heading the democrat ticket whose executive experience that qualified him for the Presidency, he proclaimed was "running my multi-million campaign so well"..  Just what, specifically has Sarah Palin done during her public service that so infuriates you..that suggests she is not qualified for the job??..please...let me know..  I may be missing something here and want my vote to count.

slvemike4u -> RE: William F. Buckley's son voting for Obama (10/16/2008 4:06:08 PM)

Ask young Mr.Buckley,it is he who jumped ship in the face of this train wreck of a candidate....though please Cory you know your not interested in the answer.It flies in the face of your own preconcieved realities...therefore it doesn't fit...oh well,be happy I know I will.

To infuriate me?  Nothing.  To suggest she should be vice president?  Again, nothing.  Sarah Palin is another of the evangelical wack jobs.

LOL, well,"Welcome to Mooseport" in reverse sure isn't the answer either.

The problem is not that smart people are running the country.  Its that smart people govern dumb people.  Dumb people who don't understand how to force their representatives to work for them. Dumb people who don't stand up. Dumb people who don't care. Dumb people fascinated with indulging themselves with toys on credit. Dumb people who only see candidate McBush or who cant see past that turban when looking at Obama. The dumb people in that rally audience that forced McCain to grab that microphone back so quickly. Dumb people who make themselves easy pickings for smart capitalists.

If William F. Buckley were starting out today, the right wing would ridicule him as "elitist" and "out of touch intellectual."

Well lets just say that needing to go to 5 or was it 6 different community colleges doesn't exactly fill me with awe when I consider her intellect...oih yeah,then she opens her mouth and confirms my suspicions.There is a lesson here if one cares to look.
