On Panorama last night, this financial mess as it is applied to Britain, was laid squarely at the feet of New Labour. Tony Blair's government in it's deregulation of the financial markets and not only deregulation, but failure to monitor. The people Blair put in to monitor the situation, the FSA, were so low paid, they could not attract even adequate brains to think. So another important body starved of funding and like they say, pay peanuts, get monkeys.

So what we have now, is Brown bailing out banks and banks stepping up their efforts to call in their debts, help for banks, but no help for the people, people are losing homes faster than ever, oh and unemployment is rising and forecast to be at two million by Christmas, just in time for the festive occaision.

So what Brown is doing in trying so he says, to stabilise the economy, is screwing over the people. Boom and bust didn't work, and the new labour experiment has gone disasterously wrong, so can they ever be trusted to run this country again?

So seeing as labour has fucked up the economy, can they, will they ever be trusted again ?

See here in the States some people are blaming the Democrats for the mess, so if I were you I wouldn't balk at blaming the Conservatives.

The thing is though - its not really a matter of trusting any of them; the City specifies what it wants and the government makes that happen, whatever colour their flag might be. And this because the City is so important to our economy (apparently), in the absence of much else otherwise. The Tories would absolutely have managed the whole thing exactly the same. Interestingly its been Vince Cable (Lib Dems) who has been screaming longest and loudest about the problems that were coming our way, but then who's interested in what the Lib Dems might have to say?

You think its bad now? I very much suspect there is a lot more to be said on this yet - and its being postponed to mid January so that Brown and New Labour dont go down as the party that robbed all of us of Christmas

But not to worry - there are lots of "work for welfare" jobs coming next summer, lagging lofts etc - after that repairing roads for your dole (much cheaper than using expensive machinery). Naturally, these wont be your lofts since you'll have been evicted from your home and you wont have a car to drive on the roads.

New Labour indeed.

It's because Blair slept with George Bush, LadyE. Had Gordon been leading back in 97...

As far as I know Labour did not deregulate the financial markets, it was Mrs T.

Labour's failure was to stand by and allow that freeing up to produce the explosion of credit and the increase in house prices.

Blaming New Labour for a worldwide, American driven financial shitfest is a bit shortsighted.
If the major brainiacs are at the private firms, why did they fuck up? The financiers were locked in a cake shop. Instead of trying to get out, they just kept stuffing themselves.

Blair wasnt pulling the purse strings when he was in charge Kittin. The treasury has always been Browns department. Thatcher set the ball rolling with deregulation and Labour made it worse, both parties share some of the blame for this. Brown also has to take some blame for his insistance on low interest rates. That was the key to making borrowing easier.

Whoever shares the blame - and the Tories and New Labour count highly amongst them, the problem for New Labour (and by association "old" Labour), is the way they have totally ditched any interest in fulfilling the claimed purpose of their party - to look after the interests of the ordinary person - in favour of doing what one might expect of the Tories, looking after the interests of those animals more equal than others.

And the worst of it, is the way they are lying about their "strong action" to look after the interests of the ordinary person, now that the more equal animals have let them down, whilst still looking after the interests of those more equal animals. Making a habit of saying one thing with the express purpose of deceiving people whilst you do something else, makes New Labour untrustworthy in my book.

Precisely. It's the Conservatives what did it, innit (as Seeks would say, but I see the poor dear is on moderation ).

No, nor should they. No hole in hell is hot enough for them.

I disagree. I think it's such a shame Thatcher's got Alzheimer's... and I shall quote my favourite artist to express my feelings about one of the people I hold personally responsible for furthering the nefarious cause of rabidly global capitalism:

The kind people
Have a wonderful dream
Margaret on the guillotine
Cause people like you
Make me feel so tired
When will you die ?

And people like you
Make me feel so old inside
Please die

And kind people
Do not shelter this dream
Make it real

(Morrissey)

Yes but she got Alz in '80...oh right the inevitable delay.
We can still spit on her if she has a state funeral can't we?

Tony Blair was always ConservativeLite. You should have been voting Tory all this time, as they are the only ones who offer progress. All Labour know how to do is tax and spend. They come along after all the hard work has been done ( Thatcher ) and let the public have a big spend-up splurge which gets you back into trouble again. Wise up. Vote Conservative, and keep voting conservative until the Labour party disintegrates with its usual internecine bickering. Then maybe another party can replace them and the whole country can move forward without the stench in the room all the time.

Even if you don't there are enough sensible Poms who've wised up and are ready to reinstate the Tories as the natural party of government. The tax and spend Labourites have had their day. They blew it as they had no plan and are inept. Now back to sensible management and with any luck Labour can disappear as being the cloth cap wearing irrelevancies they always were.
