This would be conjecture, but having been a frequent visitor to The City I would have to say that there is a romance about it that perhaps lends itself to a dramatic end.

I would also say that I do not support putting a net under the bridge. Next they will be putting a net under El Capitan because people accidently fall off of it all the time... Perhaps I should not have typed that because some jackass will think it is a good idea to do it.

i cannot imagine going back to San Francisco and seeing that beautiful bridge with an ugly net underneath it.  What is to prevent the person from jumping with a cutting tool or climbing up the net and over it?  i think this is a stupid idea and a waste of money.  Determined people will find a way to kill themselves.

i always wondered why people pick this bridge to jump off of - i have read people travel from all over just to jump from this bridge - anyone know why?

I am confused here, you obviously typed the last line.....and yet you think it is a stupid idea to try and deter people from doing it from this bridge.

People should be deterred from suicide, i just think this particular idea of a net is stupid and a waste of resources.  If i were determined to jump a net wouldn't stop me- i'd just find another spot somewhere.

I can't believe that I didn't think of this earlier - if they put that net up, you know that there will be some loony yahoos who will jump just for the fun of it.

and then sue if they get hurt doing so-

The article you linked says the net will only be seen from a few sections of the bridge and will be painted the same color of the bridge. Apparently they're working to not make it an eye sore.

A friend of mine's brother jumped off the bridge to his death. Very sad.

There was a very good article in the Atlantic a few years ago about Golden Gate suicides. If I recall correctly, the focus of the article was on people who had survived jumps or falls  off the bridge. I may be wrong about that, but at the very least, it  did spend a fair amount of ink talking about that particular aspect of the issue. I'll never forget the quote from one guy who survived his suicide attempt - "As my hands slid off the rail and I felt myself falling toward the water, I was suddenly struck by the overwhelming realization that every single problem in my life was completely solvable - except, of course, for the fact that I had just jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge."

bluepanda, I read about that guy too.  It really affected me when I read his words and somehow connected to that... oh shit... what have I done... god... too late now.  I am glad he lived and was able to share the moment with people.  If it helped one person realize that you can't turn back from some things and not do something they were thinking of and how one can have a moment where they change their mind... it's a good thing.

I live in San Francisco, and I have to say that I prefer the idea of a net over the barriers along the sides of the bridge that were the alternative. The bridge usually has a net or two below it to keep the painters from falling, so a permanent net is not really that much of a big deal. As for the people who jump, they have a pretty good success rate, and only one person who has lived has ever jumped again. Most who lived said they changed thier minds right before hitting the water...

I am thinking this is a dumb idea, between PETA and EPA; I wouldn't think they'd get by with a net that might catch birds, and a net that wouldn't is sure to end up with injured would be suicidals who will in veritable sue for a broken arm or leg; and cost the government even more money. I am thinking it's less expensive for whatever the cost have the suicides from the bridge... and I am sure there is a better way to deter da people from jumping than a net...which seems like an inefficient plan.

Could it be that would be suiciders pick the bridge because you only pay a toll going in one direction so you can get on free?  Just a thought. I'm on the east coast and don't remember when I paid the last time I drove over the bridge.

The good news for people who do travel over the Bridge and do not want to die in a watery grave is that the Commission that is responsible for the Golden Gate Bridge commissioned a "Wind study and environmental impact study" of the safety net, and you can drive across thinking about your sexy secretary withhout concerns.  The study showed that any contemplated suicide deterrent system installed, "should remain stable for wind speeds
that are expected to occur once every 10,000 years".  I guess if they are proven wrong in three or four thousand years someone will blog about it...

Just as a wierd side note...yeah, yeah, consider the source.....it is actually a little known fact that Great White sharks are actually in the waters under the GGB.....so if the fall doesn't do it for ya, you always have being eaten (somewhat) alive by a shark left as an option.  That may be why some bodies are never recovered......personally, nothing in life is as bad as death.....I'll get there soon enough!

And I agree with those who say the net will encourage idiots to jump off of it "just because it's there".......and the many lawsuits that will follow.  Anyone who is truly serious about ending it all won't care about a net or any other kind of barrier.  Short of putting a human on the bridge every 50 feet, there is no way that the deaths from jumping will ever be stopped.  Of course, finding someone who will volunteer to try to stop someone intent on going over the side may be tricky too......getting dragged over the side would really put a crimp in your week!

Edited to add (in light of veletears' response to Greedy):  Here on the Erie Canal we get the occasional suicide attempt off one of the bridges.  Most don't succeed but some do and these bridges are only a fraction of the height that the Golden Gate is.  Although Height is certainly a factor I suspect an equally important factor is what part of your body hits the water first.
How is it possible to commit suicide by jumping off the bridge in Brockport? That is the one I'd think most likely since SUNY-Brockport is there.  It's really not that high. We used to dive/jump from higher than that at the quarry in Hulberton.

I will search through my files to find the research on the use of barriers/nets etc, they have been found to be effective in reducing suicides from popular spots to jump.  It may be because the net etc provides one more delay for a person contemplating suicide and those few seconds may be enough to get them to rethink jumping.  If it saves one life I think it is worth it. From what I have seen the majority of people attempt suicide once while in crisis and these barriers are aimed more at these people rather than at the person who has had long term suicidal ideation and will simply find another way to die.

The AAS (American Association of Suicidology) website probably has some info on this topic.
