Our behavior doesn't much change public to private. We are generally considerate of not pushing our lifestyle choices into other people's faces but most of what we do really wouldn't raise an eyebrow anyway. The nature of our D/s dynamic doesn't require various sorts of restrictions on her behavior nor a bunch of "place reminding" rituals. We're just Jeff and Carol. Jeff prefers to lead, Carol prefers to follow. Those preferences don't change when we go out the front door.

nova has similar reactions with Master.  In public we would look like a normal couple, its just a glance He has to give to show the girl His dominance over her nothing more no words need be spoken at all.  nova knows her place and Master treats her very well she is happy being His.

i am the same with my M'Lady in public with the doors and such, i wear my formal collar whenever i am with her and i get many comments on it. i always anser the truth (to the older ones that is) on what it is and represents. to the younger ones i just say its a nice neclace. as far as being noticed in public the only thing that seems to get noticed is when she asks me to neal before her.

Does your D type show dominance over you openly in public?  My Daddy will sometimes have me walk a pace behind him, or take my wrist firmly and say "come with your Daddy."  This makes shopping at Home Depot ever so much more entertaining.

He gives me public displays of affection that reflect our relationship but never something that would make other people uncomfortable - other than those who are made uncomfortable by PDA in general. He will refer to me as "girl" but never in a manner designed to attract attention from others. In general we look and act like any other couple with our arms around each other and calling each other disgustingly cute pet names.

Master has many ways of controlling me in public.  As there are many ways i show my respect and obedience as Master's slave.   These are a few.

-Walking just behind Him
-waiting outside a business till He arrives.
-opening the door for Him.
-sitting on the floor at His side when it is possible.
-serving Him food and drink before others and myself.
-Asking permission to eat, drink, smoke, even use the restroom.
-He will grasp my hair and hold in hard in His fist.  Gently shake me.
-Cutting, preparing and lighting His cigars for Him.

yes.  we didn't choose our personalities, nor do we feel the expression of them in public is inappropriate.  He has a dominant personality, this slave a submissive one.  it doesn't get turned off when we leave the bedroom, dungeon, house or country, so of course it carries over when we venture out...it IS how we respond to each other, 24/7.

a few examples:
this slave looks to Him to point to the chair He wants her to sit in, before sitting down
this slave will wait in the line while He does whatever He wants, until it is our "turn"
He orders for this slave
this slave leans close to His ear and whispers a request for permission to use the restroom or otherwise leave His presence while we are out and He either nods or says yes/no
this slave asks His permission to smoke

Even after spending several hours with Merc and beth, I never noticed beth doing that.  Meaning, it was not obvious, contrived, forced, etc., ... their interactions were so natural.  I fully expected beth to be more... well, quiet and meek I guess, but that is definitely not the case! LOL!

I have seen people whose interactions in public ARE obvious, and at times, seem inappropriate to the surroundings.  Merc and beth are a shining example of how it can be done with grace.

I was just talking about this last night.  [:)]  There are so many things that can be carried on in a D/s relationship in public without pushing it on anyone or offending anyone.   So many of the posters have given prime examples of them in their responses.   A D/s relationship doesn't have to stop just because you're now in public.
