There's no reason that they can't. What they've got for health insurance is what used to be fairly standard for employer-provided coverage. It's really the kind of coverage we all need. Comprehensive coverage with affordable co-pays and deductibles.

This is the deal that most folks making over median wage get. They don't pay for their insurance (or pay for a small percentage of it) directly and pay an affordable amount in co-pays and deductibles. Health insurance and a retirement plan and the tax benefits of these things are part of their compensation. Many workers and unions have accepted lower pay increases for many years to keep their employer-provided group health benefits because they understood what a burden to employers these things are. When the tax incentives go away (as they will under the McCain plan) and employers find that they are paying more in taxes to offer these benefits, many employers will stop offering the benefits and/or require higher employee contributions. As an employee, I'll be taxed on what my employer provides for me and on what I personally spend on health care. Personally, I'll be screwed, and I'm not in a high-income group. I'll have the option to purchase other coverage, but it won't be as good as what my employer is providing for me now. Under the McCain plan I'll have myriad choices for coverage, but the insurance company I buy fron can set up in the state with the most lax regulations. My state insurance regulators will be basically powerless to help me in a dispute, but under the McCain plan they'll be responsible for working these things out which will mean more tax $ at the state level for negotiation and litigation. Under the McCain plan (which is also more or less the AMA "Voice for the Uninsured" plan), the only people who will be benefited are the insurance companies and those who invest in them.

How will giving them worse health care coverage improve health care coverage for the rest of us? Wouldn't it make more sense to make sure we all have good coverage than to make sure they have crappy coverage?
