Endorses Obama.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 12:00:46 AM)

Wow, another reason not to vote for Obama. I mean Powell has about as much credibility as Bush, if you remember he was the pitch man at the UN, and delivered the speech riddled with manufactured lies.

Powell is one of the major reasons we are in Iraq.

awmslave -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 12:10:57 AM)

Powell endorces Obama only because Obama is an African American. Nobody believes Obama's Western European type socialist economics ideas impress the general.

cloudboy -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 12:24:52 AM)

It might help if you actually watched the endorsement before you criticize/characterize it. Powell was pretty thoughtful and even handed in his analysis.

awmslave -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 12:30:24 AM)

Yes, Powell can talk. Remember UN when endorcing attack on Iraq. I still maintain my claim.

I thought the same. It was a good message, whether you like Powell or not.

I know this wasn't a response to my post directly. but...

Hrmmm, I didn't here him say anything other than mention Palin(he thinks was a bad choice), and talk about (Ayers(spelling), the weather underground). Beside that it was nothing but general opinions based on nothing. No specific of policies were mentioned, no in depth thought at all was displayed. Fluff on top of fluff, is my analysis.

Eye of the Beholder I guess.

SilverMark -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 2:32:51 AM)

I had heard Powell would give an endorsement so I made sure to watch yesterday. He was his normal calm self giving a reasoned and complete view.
Powell, Iraq not withstanding, does carry weight with his opinions and I am sure will be bashed within the Republican circles for his choice. I always got
the impression that he was somehow duped by the Bush Administration but, find it hard to believe that a military man of his ability could be taken advantage of.
If he decides to write of his time in the Bush administration I would gladly read his thoughts but, I am sure right after we all watch Bush leave on that chopper in January
heading off to Texas there will be a flood of books telling us all just how the Georgie Boy and Dead eye Dick show really operated and just how bad it was inside.
The post-mortum should make for great reading.

BelladonicHaze -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 4:27:15 AM)

I would never vote for somebody that endorsed Odinga for president in Kenya... if you care to inform yourself just youtube it.   - Obama has way too many anti-american, radical, marxist liasons for me to trust him.  This Odinga character is responsible for too much bloodshed and he named his frst born after castro.

corysub -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 4:59:05 AM)

A "transformational President"..!  It would have been interesting to get some understanding from General Powell as to how he believes Obama will "transform" the government.  That IS the key friction between pro and con Obama voters facing the choice of McCain or Obama in a couple of weeks.  Unfortunately, for me it's not a choice between two good men, one of whom I feel more in sync with than the othe...it's between a man, John McCain, that has proved time and time again that "country is first"...has shown more than a willingness to reach across the aisle on important legislation (oftentimes pissing me off!), and the man, Barack Obama, that has an elequent tongue that is charming, focused and well-disciplined, but does not share my values.  Choosing Obama would be a choice for the "comfort factor" of Big Brother Government holding all the answers for our lives.  Sorry, I don't wait by the mailbox for the government check to arrive...most people don't..they get off their butts, kiss the dog goodbye and pet the wife...and go off to work...followed soon in so many cases by his spouse on her way to her job too!
And while it's tough...it's what we do!

Obama does not "share my values".  I disagaree with his decision but still respect General Powell, I agree with and respect Secretary Rice, who occupies the same seat once he once held, and so many other blacks who should be judged on the quality of their minds and not the color of their skin, to paraphrase another great black leader.
Baracks entire "claim to fame" was his negative opinion on Iraq versus Hillary Clinton base on a "speech" with little consequence to himself.  Whenever there was tough legislation in the Illinois Senate, the bulk of his legislative experience, he chose to stand up full of sound and fury and than vote "present" over 100 times.  We don't have much else to go on in measuring how this man will govern as President, but that does not impress me on his resume'. On the other hand,  Hillary stood up for what she believed and cast her vote based on what many considered the threat of Sadam, including over a dozen U.S. resolutions to try to find a peaceful solution to the issue.  Powell also tracked the intel and in no way was "duped" by Bush...a man that liberals describe as one of the most stupid men in the history of mankind.  If that were true...and it's not, Powell would not have the creditablility he has today.
Bottom line, I think the impact of Powell joining the Obama team of supporters will be somewhat of a plus among people who look for a comfort level in the opinions of others on voting, but also a negative by some who see his endorsement as an "Oprah" ...that man vote and do not appreciate the seeming affinity of Obama for far left extremist bedfellow as friends, and a "share the wealth", redistribution economic point of view...ie socialism.
In the interim, among "likely voters" the polls show Obama in the lead with a few points.  Only a few points! hNot significant when you consider the eight years of Bush bashing, the weak economy this year after seven years of expansion, by the way, the fear and insecurity people feel...and the $600 million war chest that Obama has been working with afater he lied about going with government voting funds.   Only a few points considering the tens of millions of free propaganda from favorite pundits like Maldow, Blitzer, Keith (of course), and "I got a tingle up my leg listening to that speech" Chris Matthews. It is truly amazing that ONLY a few points separate McCain from Obama.  I wish it was the other way around, but this race is still far from over.  Someone will probably correct me, but I heard either Buchanan or another conservative pundit say that Reagan was behind even more at this time prior to the election.  (rubbing my lucky rabit foot)

NuminousLeader -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 5:05:13 AM)

Yes yes, perhaps that is because he believed all the BS Bush told him about the "weapons of mass destruction", you know the ones Bush has yet to admit he lied about.

Just more sour grapes from a party that has nothing going for it because the people of this country are tired of the lies, the cover-ups and the GOP taking care of the top 1% of this country

If you had ever listened to Powell speak he is very much a liberal when it comes to just about anything but foreign policy... I do not think Powell endorsed him because he is a black guy. He endorsed him because he wants a position in his admin

Every single day you parrot the latest Fox News whine rofl. Last week it was Bill Ayers, but since that didn't stick you're trying to shift to 'socialism'. It's hilarious, especially today, as the society we now live in is socialistic for the largest banking institutions, and rabidly capitalistic for the rest of us [:D] . Like European healthcare, man. You need to look into definitions and start from scratch, because Fox isn't doing your credibility any good.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 5:34:21 AM)

I'll probably the only one that says it, but I don't respect Powell's opinion.  I've never been a Colin Powell worshipper.  I've always been critical of him.  He's an opportunist and he's never stuck his neck out on any issue.

The guy was one of the main culprits in whitewashing the My Lai Massacre.  It's a plain fact.  He didn't stick his neck out; he just wrote what he was told.  He managed to make it to Brigadier General before he was 40 years old, and that's almost unheard of.  He didn't manage that because of his record.  He didn't have  much combat time in Vietnam, and he wasn't that decorated of a soldier.  He achieved all of that because of affirmative action (by his own admission) and because he never made waves.  He didn't make any waves while he had his other token position in the Bush administration either.  He only decided to endorse Obama a few weeks from the election, now that it's almost a sure thing that Obama will win.  Last year he donated the maximum amount to McCain.

So I could care less who Colin Powell endorsed.  It doesn't surprise me at all; it doesn't ruffle my feathers in the least.  Fuck him.

bipolarber -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 5:38:10 AM)

Powell was one of the few Bush cabinet members who had any kind of credibility to begin with. No surprise that they Bushies used him as a patsy at the UN, handing him BS "intel" and telling him to go out there and sell the world that a bunch of ice cream trucks were portable bio weapons factories.

Now that he's endorsed the sane candidate, you can expect a concerted effort by the GOP to trash talk him. Things to look for:
"Powell could have stopped the war but resigned instead."
"Colin Powell was never a real conservative."
"Colin Powell is only endorsing Obama because he's black."
(If the latter were the case, wouldn't he have done so far earlier in the race? No, his reasons of wanting to observe the candidates under stress rings true to me.)

I know you won't believe this, but Fox News is not on my must see fav list.  Frankly, I enjoy Morning Joe, on MSNBC, I love to watch Keith Olbermann take his girlie fits...and am glued to CNBC most of the day.  Sure, I watch Fox, but, unlike so many liberals who only know one message, I develop my own opinions, mostly based on life experience.  Some of us do have a life!  And Ayers is not a dead issue.. it's one of the core reasons to doubt Obama's judgement.

Sanity -> RE: Colin Powell (10/20/2008 5:53:08 AM)

I haven't heard THIS on Fox News, only on Glenn Beck - and he's on CNN.

Which presidential candidate (who is just like us, by the way) dines on lobster hors d'oeuvres, whole steamed lobsters, and Iranian caviar?

I wonder if Colin Powell will be joining Michelle and Barack in the Waldorf Astoria for some caviar specially imported from Iran in order to celebrate their new allegiance...

Our intelligence units say that Iranians are killing American soldiers in Iraq, by the way. Just a tiny little footnote.

Howabout the Republicans that have served on committees with Ayers? Do they lack judgment too?

It is a dead issue, in fact the issue has been dead for about 4 decades, it is just McCain desperately trying to fear monger because he is getting his ass handed to him in this election... otherwise why wait until this late in the game to bring it up? If it was such a terrible thing, why not talk about it during his primary? He didn't because he is going down sewer style every day we get closer to Nov 4th. Its called serving up the red meat.

Now that sort of behavior maybe something you value in a candidate... I just don't share your values
