Why can't women whistle?  Here in the UK I've never met a single woman who can whistle a tune properly.  Most, in fact, can't whistle a note at all.

Why the feck is that?  I've known more women who can wrestle than women who can whistle.

Any experts on feminist sociology or psychology in the house?

We can. I do and it is considered bad luck in many European countries so girls don't learn. I can carry a tune with a whistle, call the dog or when my kids were young get their attention far easier than yelling for them. (Pre-cell phone days). I even taught an African Gray parrot I had several tunes including the William Tell Overture.

We're too busy training our tongues to do other things.  Seriously.

Of course, a Lady would never do such a thing as to whistle - such after all is the habit of common labourers.

As a lack of luck (and some design) would have it, I aint no lady and I have done my share of labour.

Whistling the theme music to Gone With The Wind -

Don't you need gaps in your teeth to be able to whistle more than one note?

Not at all, its more down to the development of great labial and glottal dexterity.

Presumably, the desire for a happy tune is what provokes males to offer so many opportunities for this development

I'm not a virtuoso, but I can whistle a fair rendition of a happy tune.  So no one will suspect I"m afraid.

you know, I found the same problem in Korea.  People were fascinated when I put my two fingers under my tongue and whistled loudly to get their attention.  It was like I was an alien or god or something.... course maybe i am

There are a few different ways to whistle- through the teeth, the lips, or the fingers. Whistling musically is always (as far as I know and/or can make up first thing in the morning) done through the lips. Different notes are obtained by varying the speed at which air passes through the lips, as well as changing the size and shape of the orifice (more worthwhile practice for women ).

In the States I've never noticed a gender bias in whistling. I remember a woman who worked at my college who whistled remarkably well- really quite pleasant to listen to.

Never could whistle worth a damn.  Oh I get some sound, but it is similar to a 12 year old boys voice while he's whispering with the sharp peeks and low sputters.  And that's through my teeth.  That old call the dog whistle is impossible, all I get is wet fingers.  But occasionally with the right blade of grass I'll get one solid tone loud enough for neighbors to hear.
shrug............
