Status: offline 		I'm making candle holders out of 4x4 douglus fur posts, cut to size, and the craft originaly used tea light candles, but I'd like to use something a little bigger, and wondered if those glass votive candle holders would present a fire hazerd tucked inside the 4x4. The fire hazard wuld come from a bare flame being near wood, and with the glass to be between the flame and the wood I don't see how it'd be a hazard.

Status: offline 		If you really want to err on the side of caution, drill your hole a half inch larger than the diameter of the candle holder and get some fireproof fabric from a local wood stove and fireplace supply store. Wrap the candleholder in the fabric, and you should be golden.

Status: offline 		Any open flame is considered a fire hazard and should be watched.  If the glass candleholder is large enough in comparison to the flame then not too much heat should pass through the glass and into the wood.  If you treat the wood with some type of sealant you should make sure that it is completely dry before putting the candles in place.  You can touch the base of the glass to see how much heat is passing through it.  If it is too hot to touch then you will know that there is a chance that the wood around it will dry out quickly and will have the chance of becoming kindling.

I believe in these cases the wood is treated with a flame retardant coating.

Go to Michael's Crafts and they should be able to advise you...

Good idea...even sand or clay could be used around the glass tube.

If you make the diameter of the tube wide enough you should not have any problems. That will keep the fire to the center. Narrow deep tubes would not work anyway because you could not see the light and flame after it burned below the top of the wood.

Status: offline 		Hmm, lets see.  I have a fire in at least one fireplace in our home on a daily basis almost.
When we get bad wood...wood that isn't quite dry enough to start.  I pour candle wax onto the wood
to get it started.  I do this because the candle wax burns a while, burns hot and gets the wood started.

It works every single time.  Though as others have stated there are candle holders out there that are made of wood.

I'd go with the fire retardant sheet inside.  Even the sand idea sounds good as sand usually puts out fire.

Status: offline 		Get yourself a piece of fir, drill the hole in it, and set it outside with the votive in it.

If you do a practice test, and let it go for hours, you should get a good idea about how much heat will transfer, how likely it will be to burn, etc.

It's a candle, not a bonfire in the livingroom.

OP, when we put up stuff for the haunted house, we are required by law to usea fire retardant additive that we pour into the paint. The panels  will not burn, even when we tried a blowtorch on one. (Zomg playing with fire)

I'm not realll sure where you can get just a little bit, since we buy in 5 gallon buckets, but you might try some craft stores, or perhaps ebay or something.

Status: offline 		WEll with those, typically the flame stays above the wood. All though I did see one where the candle went the length of the candle and the wick would be inside the wood eventually.

Is it PROBABLY OK? Probably. Would I leave it unattended? No.

Would I market it with the POSSIBILITY of a fire hazard? No.
