A tens unit sends a superficial charge across the muscle, usually making it contract and release. A violet wand creates a superficial charge of static electricity that runs across the top of the skin (although some units can be pretty strong they usually aren't strong enough to cause a muscle to contract).

Violet wands are 'pretty' because you can see the current. Tens units don't.

WayHome -> RE: what is the difference?? (8/4/2004 7:45:54 PM)

More to it than that.

The violet wand is an extremely high voltage with essentially 0 current (static charge) which is why it can pass through air and spark. It will stimulate superficial nerves quite a bit (sting like a hell at high intensity). A TENS unit works very differently and is much lower voltage administered at a particular grequency designed to cause muscle contraction. It does not stimulate superficial nerves and what you feel is not the current itself but the muscular contraction it ilicits.

Very different sensation altogether.

ScorpioMaster -> RE: what is the difference?? (8/4/2004 7:52:21 PM)

Tens has medical purpose were you use it to reduce pain by stimulating the nerves running along the area. If you got extreme pain in the back you can use it to cover it up with mild electrical current but one problem the pain comes back worse than ever.
The violet wand feels more like a small shock you would get when you create static shock and touch something mental and you zap yourself.

MrThorns -> RE: what is the difference?? (8/5/2004 7:33:00 AM)

To add to what has already been said:

Violet wands are a bit safer, as the charge stays on the surface of the skin while with a TENS Unit or a Folsum unit (The 312 rocks, btw) penetrates the muscle and can distrupt the function of the heart if used incorrectly.

I shan't add to the descriptions...everyones doing a good job already...

but I will say that with a TENS unit... one must not use one if You have high blood pressure, heart problems, angina(sp?), varacose veins or there may be a risk that you may be pregnant. I am not sure if that also applies to wands...

<laughing> I used a TENS during one of my labors.

Anyway, since proudsub is off for a cruise (bless her heart!), and I've actually asked about wands myself, I'll be proud's substitute and point out links to old threads about violet wands:

MizSuz -> RE: what is the difference?? (8/5/2004 9:40:12 PM)

The theory behind the therapeutic use of TENS is to fatigue the muscle so it will relax. It NEVER worked for me...just pissed me off and wasted my time. The tension from being pissed usually kept me from allowing the muscle to relax. <shrug> To each his own, I suppose.

Ahhhh January thanks for covering for me.[;)]

Sundew02 -> RE: what is the difference?? (8/21/2004 10:24:19 AM)

All of the above I agree with, but will add. The TENS Unit is sturdier and much smaller, but requires pads and a gel to attach to the spot you want to stimulate. The VW requires its own special case, it is a hand held device so it can be moved rapidly across cute body parts. The TENS is battery powered the VW needs an electrical outlet. Sundew

Have you ever been in physical therapy?
Did they hook you up to something that made
your muscles "jump" or work while you laid still?

That's a Tens Unit.

Violet wand is literally called that because of the
color of the glowing light, it feels abit like static
electricity.

Have a great day. Thanks for good questions.
