KaylaBound -> Cheap toys? (10/23/2008 7:34:56 AM)

It has been sugested that I try to market some of my toys on the internet.  An example would be the spreader bars that I have made, they are 3/8 pipe, with threaded eye bolts in each end, this allows about two more inches of adjustment per end.  The pipe is strong but a larger person could bend them if truly needed. I have saved time and money by not worrying about the details 'cleaning my welds, quality paint, etc' but the durability of the toys are fine.   Since these have been built I have found a faster and cheaper way to build ceartin items and could lower my cost even more.  My questions are; is there a market for these types of items, and what would others be willing to pay for these items.  Bare in mind my time and overhead for tools?  I know how much we all would like these items but are limited by income I believe this to be a solution of sorts, a trade of looks for cost...

I don't think you're going to get far with what you're doing.  People generally don't want to buy something, particularly over the internet, that looks like something they would throw together themselves in an hour or so (your comments about not worrying about the details of cleaning welds, etc.).

And any savings on time/money for the buyer would be negated by shipping costs.

People in your local area might be interested, but beyond that, I would say no. Sorry.

Thank you for your reply, positive or negative I need to know what others think.  This was based on a sugestion of something I do for fun, in my very little spare time.  I can create higher quality toys but then the cost would increase, mostly due too time.  Personaly I wouldnt care to mass produce anything but to create a few one of a kind high quality pieces.  Any sugestions?

The problem with the low end of the market is you are in that area where people think "is it cheaper to buy it or make it" and when that is even close to "I can make it" even if they can't or won't, they are not going to buy it.  Add in the fact that pipe is heavy your shipping cost is going to add a lot of expense.

People who want cheap ugly toys can go to home depot, buy dowels and screw in eye hooks for less than $5

That is why I don't race to the bottom, I make the best wooden stuff in the market, fewer buyers but they DO buy.

Another thing to consider is to find local places to see your stuff and be the local toy guru.
