Vendaval -> Record numbers of people voting early (10/23/2008 8:19:25 PM)

Absentee voting is one way to vote early.  How many others here are headed into the booth before November 4th?  Looks like this year is a record turn-out of voters across the country.  Anyone working the polls or doing a get out the vote volunteer gig this year?

"With 12 days to go until Nov. 4, Americans are casting early ballots at a record pace.

Whether encouraged by state officials to vote early and reduce the chaos and lines on Election Day, or pushed by campaigns to convert enthusiasm into tangible results, the shift to early balloting has made Election Day more of a final deadline than a one-day event."

Early voting doesn't seem to be an option in my district, unless I want to vote by mail.  I prefer to do it in person, and will stand in line as long as it takes.

DomKen -> RE: Record numbers of people voting early (10/23/2008 9:05:18 PM)

I had to stand in line for a half hour to vote early but it was necessary since I'll be working as a poll watcher on election day.

Half an hour wait is not bad for this election.
I hope and pray, I won't have to wait longer than 1 hour, but I will be prepared for
a long wait.

I voted on Wednesday.  I didn't have to wait in line at all, but they did screw up and give me the wrong ballot.  I noticed it when I didn't see the city director election on it.  They goofed and gave me a ballot for some district out of the city in the county.

A half hour would be great.  The lines have been long and the wait hours around here.

I don't think it's just the lines. After what happened in FL in 2004 people are not only skeptical about the accuracy of the voting machines, some believe that there was outright fraud.

This may or may not be true, but I think vote fraud is a good possibility, and could happen again. True or not, I believe that is some people's perception. However untrue vote fraud may be, there have been quite a few reports of problems with voting machines. The lack of a paper trail has been criticized quite a bit, and I think some remember.

Of course some don't, some will walk in there and use machines they have never seen before (there were changes made after 2004) and hope they got it right this time. They don't realize that the problems with voting machines were greater than say in ATM machines by orders of magnitude. Some people use an ATM almost every day and never have a problem, some have a problem once, or even once a year if that. The ATM machines are very accurate, they know if you overdraw by a dollar, of course then they have you by the short hairs. True errors are very rare in that system.

Simple math will not perform an effective argument. The entire electronic banking system is quite secure and it could be argued that because of the sheer number of people using the voting machines on one given day artificially inflates the error rate, or at least the perception of the error rate. On top of ATM machines, electronic banking works many times a day for some, especially bank to bank and foreign transactions.

There have also been some serious allegations made against the software companies which programmed the voting machines. Perhaps only allegations, but there are those who remember them, thus the trend.

Don't forget, you can vote (in most places I think) by mail if you choose for any number of reasons. My Father voted by mail because he's pushing seventy (less than a month) and would have trouble standing in a long line. Some literally can't get off work, a poll worker comes to mind having been mentioned, but there are other jobs, such as firemen. How would you like to see your local firemen in line with you at the poles and then go home to a pile of ashes ? EMT  workers, there are plenty of good reasons. Being a celebrity or politician (is there that much difference these days ?) would be a valid reason as well.

Therefore to me, this trend is not surprising at all.

I think we should all have to vote on ELECTION day, except those who need to vote by absentee ballot. If I have to listen to all the BS until election day, I might as well get to hear it all before I go into the booth [sm=afraid.gif]

you said it Term.  go over by a penny and the ATM  deals w you.

sorta a waste of money to buy machines used only a little. as long as it is eletronic- put it online.  ppl could vote at the library or home.

Early voting a good idea.  tho i like by mail

mhawk -> RE: Record numbers of people voting early (10/24/2008 10:42:12 PM)

i'd like to throw in an example. i'd rather go in and vote but not so in my county. It's county mail in ballots here so we voted earlier than what we normally would have.I'm personally glad to have it done and in.

I cannot remember which news program  today discussed the problems encountered with early voting thus  far, but  I hope the screw ups do not mean another court case is in the offing.  Apparently, those states using paper do not and will not have enough paper ballots.  In Florida there have been reports from those using the electronic machines that when they pressed Obama the screen shifted the vote quickly over to McCain.  Up North just the opposite occurred.  The powers that be said it was a programing problem but did not explain if they could correct the problem.  One reporter stated all a voter can do at this point is watch the screen and make sure the selection does not change visually.  My question is what about programing problems that cannot be seen?  Roberts and Alito etc. are probably drooling at the prospect of stealing another election.

I do not know if I like the concept of early voting, there are some things I like about it and others I do not...

But one thing is for certain... high voter turnout usually favors change and it usually helps democrats

Well, speaking for myself, I never particularly like coming home to a pile of ashes, no matter who I've been hangin' with.

I disagree.  The numbnuts in Florida and Colorado are likely still incapable of handling the voting process.  Let's help them out by giving them a chance to process votes prior to the madhouse on Nov 4.
