greetings to all,

I have a question.  Has anyone here ever been trained (or trained someone) as a geisha would be?  I'm asking because I seek a mentor to further my skills or information that may deepen my knowledge.  I appreciate any replies.

well wishes,

True geisha training happens at a geisha school and takes about as long as it takes to become a doctor.  Interesting page here: http://people.howstuffworks.com/geisha2.htm

greetings Taggard,

Thank you for your reply.  I've seen the site before; it's a good one for an introduction to the geisha.  Have a lovely day!

well wishes,

Part of the reason the process is so long has nothing to do with the volume of information to impart but as a way of funding the process.  They take poor wayward girls and raise them and they have to earn their keep along the way.  The wonderful thing about wanting to be a geisha is that you are being judged by someone (presumably an American) who's knowledge of the subject falls far short of someone well versed in the subject.  So their ability to be critical is far short of someone more versed in the subject and so the requirement to be "good" is far less than is required in Japan.

And considering the overall lack of grace in this country, anything along these lines has to be a huge improvement.

Try the book Geisha by Liza Dalby.  She's the only Westerner ever to undergo authentic geisha training in Japan.

JustDarkness -> RE: Geisha Training (10/24/2008 11:08:48 AM)

she was a model befor not?
I saw her on tv yesterday. They talked about the book. It seems to be very hard for a westerner to "fit" in the submissive asian culture.
Also Japan has made it more difficult for westerners to participate in the training...especially to keep their culture their own

Well, to be fair you have to take into consideration that we are talking about a culture that believes that committing hari kari is an acceptable way of avoiding the embarassment of losing face or falling short of the mark.

Yes certain classes in Japans history did that. But "beeing fair" has not so much to do if you try to be as them. They will not be fair.
(Seppeku was not the way to do things..to please/serve your Master was.. seppeku was to safe your sorry ass..lol...acceptable is a big word...it was a tool..they preferred life also)

but those 2 are sure weird things...well at least for us. Agree with that mistoferin

not to speak about that holiday where they go to the temple with all those cocks and worship it...lol

XaviersXian -> RE: Geisha Training (10/24/2008 11:49:07 AM)

greetings to all,

I think I should have been clearer in my original post.

I own (or have read) every geisha related book that exists on the market in this country (and all but a few that are available on Amazon).  I am also a serious scholar of Japanese language and culture, and have read very extensively (amongst other things, I actually wrote to Liza Dalby at one point, asking her the best way to go about learning the art forms she practiced when she had her time as a geisha).  Seeing as actually going and training as a geisha is closed to me (being gaijin, I would have next to no chance of even meeting someone who could make the proper introductions for me, let alone be able to help me in a long term sense to develop and sustain the relationships needed for this type of training) I wanted to get as close as I could in a western sense; to me, this translates to excellent deportment (learning to walk and carry myself with the grace of a model) exemplary language ability (both in written and spoken english and other languages), honed social/hospitality/artistic/musical talents, and what I consider advanced communication skills (a talent for observing, and being empathic, for example).

I hope this helps me to get the information I seek.

well wishes,

perhaps this is something?

sravaka -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 6:28:05 AM)

Hmm.  Short of finding a full-blown geisha school, you could explore some of the individual arts geisha practice, few if any of which are unique to geisha, or other Japanese arts-- flower arranging, tea ceremony, samisen playing, traditional dance, etc.  Depending where you live, you might be able to turn up a bored/lonely wife who's accompanied her businessman husband to Australia and who would jump at the chance to engage with a "foreigner" and teach you an art she's familiar with.  (If you're in a city, hang advertisements in Japanese restaurants.)  You could learn a lot from even a non-geisha Japanese woman about controlled, elegant, outwardly submissive behavior.  You might also learn a thing or two from study of Japanese language-- a need for observation and empathy is pretty much built into it.

Just a few thoughts.  Good luck!

sravaka -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 6:29:47 AM)

I don't know if she's ever modelled, but she's trained as an academic, I think an anthropologist.

OttersSwim -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 9:43:13 AM)

They need male Geishas for the Ladies.  I would SO sign up for that training!  [;)]

antipode -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 11:08:35 AM)

There are quite a few Western women that train as geishas in Japan, and they do have a fast track training - geisha's, after all, are traditionally brought up to be geisha, it isn't something Japanese women have as a career choice.

You might want to consider that fast track. Since you're somewhat local to Japan, and as an Ozzie have better access to things Asia Pacific, why not head for Tokyo, go to Roppongi, and ask one of the hundreds of Western girls working there for advice, some may be able to hook you up.

roughleather -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 12:00:13 PM)

A good first step would be to learn the tea ceremony.

The Consulate-General of Japan offers an occasional training course in the tea ceremony, in Perth. The current course just started this week. See
http://www.lovingperth.com/en/article/228/tea-ceremony-demonstration-course

Meanwhile, work on learning to tie and wear formal obi.

Midori, San Francisco's famous Japanese-American dominatrix, will sometimes do public demos in formal obi. This is a delight to watch.

DMFParadox -> RE: Geisha Training (10/25/2008 2:45:57 PM)

Geisha training is pretty brutal. If you've done as much research on the subject as you said, you know that, and I applaud your desire to keep at it. If you succeed, that would very much be something.

I imagine that somewhere in this country is a place that attempts the same kind of training. It'd be worth it to find out where.
