Fresh bread for me too, or rice and beans, but the smell of someone else's cooking is best.  That means nothing will be burnt or otherwise inedible.  ~smiles~

even if its holly's cooking???

lol, linnea, lutefiske!! i'm a former minnesotan, i know ABOUT lutefiske, but fortunately have never had to HAVE it!

OMG!!  Neither have I, thank all the gods.  I never could get past the smell nor the idea of eating food that had been cured in lye.  I understand from lutefiske devotees that it's quite good, so maybe once before I die....

Rulepulse (sp) is a type of homemade lunchmeat made of several different meats, lamb being one of them.  After it's cooked & formed, Granny used to set it on the counter against the wall with bricks on the other 2 sides to form it into a square block.  This shaping took a few days & oddly, nobody ever got sick from eating the non-refrigerated meat.  My theory is that we were hardier back then.  [:D]

Good Korean food, for some reason - it's not like I grew up with it, but smelling it, seeing it, makes me feel good.

Other than that, basmati rice, garlic, garlic, garlic.  Fresh popcorn.  Good seafood that is not breaded or deep fried - especially fond of seafood soups - bouillabaisse, nabe - or Greek oysters on the half shell.  All of those smell great and make me feel better.

chocolate Malt-O-Meal and Joe's glazed doughnuts at 2 in the morning during Cram Week...

grandma used to watch me in the mornings, and during the winter, I got malt-o-meal for breakfast, thinned with milk so i could drink it through astraw on the way to school...

the doughtnuts... grandpa used to work swing shift, but on his 4-midnight shifts, he always came home with fresh Joe's doughnuts and a gallon of milk... Gods I miss both of them horribly...

I love being outside in the summer when someone starts up their charcoal grill.  (the gas grills aren't quite the same!)I love both the smell of the charcoal burning down to coals with that faint tinge of starter fluid (I know that sounds dumb, but I think that smells good, goo!), and the smell of the chicken or ribs or steaks or whatever they're grilling.  I usually end up firing up my own grill and putting some stripes on something. [:)]

Oh, yeah!!  That's one of the best smells in the whole world & brings back childhood memories too.  My Grandfather taught me to put the minced garlic directly on the coals right before putting the meat on & that's such a yummy smell!!  It tastes better than putting the garlic on the meat.

I grew up in the fan in Richmond. The sauers plant is 2 blocks over from where I used to live. I remember on the days they were running the vanilla line the smell would drift through my block. I used to get up really early in the morning and can remember walking outside on foggy spring mornings when the city had not woken up yet and smelling it. To this day the smell of vanilla brings those quiet mornings back to me.

Bacon, yes and coffee.   When I was home from college, the smell of Mom cooking bacon, the coffee brewing & seeing Dad had a couple dozen bagels for us kiddos.  Fresh bagels from the bagel shop that were still warm.  Yummy.  Living in NYC did have advantages.
