My phone, internet and tv are through my local cable company.  One feature that cable provides is that I can see remotely my call history.  On any day I can see within a few minutes the phone numbers that have called my home.  However, not all numbers that show up on the webpage are the same as what appears on my caller id.  For instance, recently I received a call (I was at home) and the caller id said it was coming from xxx-xxx-xxxx, when I went to work the next day I checked my online call history and the number that appears is (my area code) xxx-xxxx.  Anyone have any ideas as to how this is possible?  BTW, I did call both numbers.  With the first number I get a recording that says I’ve either misdialed or the number has been disconnected.  When I dial the second number, all I get is a busy signal.  Any information would be appreciated.  Thanks.

[Mod Note:  telephone numbers removed.  Please call your cable company for assistance with this.]

Some seem to be able to manipulate the CID signal, which comes between the first and second rings when a call comes in. I have literally gotten calls that read out 888-888-8888 and 000-000-0000. I also still get unknowns, which I thought were supposed to be illegal in the US.

A few years ago I got a couple of calls from a guy from Sweden on his Swedish based cellphone, and it read out with the country code and everything. This was not at random, we had a bit of business. Even roaming to the US it still accurately reported the number.

I'd like to know how these phreakers do it actually. Look up phreakers you might find it interesting. They were the ones selling the black boxes that would get you free long distance back in the day when it cost real money. They had a few other tricks up their sleeve as well.

So what I am saying is that the CID signal sent to your phone can be manipulated, therefore I would rather trust what the website says. BTW if that's the type of phone that you need to have your PC on to use, I hope it isn't over twenty bucks a year. Yes I said year. Got this "majicjack" phone that works just fine. All you need is highspeed internet and to buy the unit which plugs into a USB port.

Thanks for the responses.  I was hoping someone out there would be able to tell me how it happens.  BTW, my cable company tells me what I am experiencing cannot happen. ~go figure~

maybe the numbers are coming from a company that has multiple lines?  each line has an associated number.  we have 6 different numbers associated with the desk phone here.

Try calling the odd numbers(and given numbers) and see what you get.

PM, I get, on various CID units, blocked, restricted, whatever. Unkown is a different thing, as is "no data sent". They are not the same thing. A number calling with CID blocking reads out so, because the data is sent, it's just the chip in your phone has instructions not to display it. Therefore *69 can work. Also LEO phones don't not have this feature, they read everything, nor can you block your number when you call a toll free line.

I did, the first one gave me a "disconnected" message and the 2nd one rings busy every time I've tried.

Some large businesses are able to put in any number and name they choose. They can do this randomly, so when they are calling KY. it looks like the call comes from KY. from INSERT BUSINESS NAME HERE and when they call NY. it looks like the call comes from NY. and from INSERT DIFFERENT BUSINESS NAME HERE.
This is not something that is available to the general public. I only know about it from researching some calls we get here quite often.
Google can often give you some viable info.
