I was in line at the grocery store the other day, and some idiot in front of me was yammering away to the clerk about how much gas prices have come down, and how long it would take before we got back under $2. It hadn't occured to him that they'll go right back after the election. Funny how that seems to happen for every election. Then, this morning, something was a bit odd. Daylight savings time. I always like that extra hour of weekend, and a bit of extra sleep in the morning. It seems to make the next few days feel a little easier. This is the last weekend in October. Why didn't I reset the clock on the microwave this morning? Last year, to get a bit of utility savings, they moved it forward a couple weeks into mid-Oct., but this year? It's been pushed back to the weekend before the election, and the time change will be on November 2. Can't have tired, grumpy voters who paid over $4 a gallon on their way to the polls, I guess...

It's always been the last Sunday in October in the UK; makes it easy to remember for everyone each year.

It isnt a conspiracy. It should have been done sooner. We are pushing 7 bn people on the planet- of course the resources will be tighter. SS goes up 5.8% in Jan. That likely to gain the elderly vote for McCain. But gas prices? It isnt connected. Small countries might totally bankrupt

Nixon tried to get rid of it. We all walked to school in the dark and watched the sunrise. Then someone figured out kids walking along the streets in the dark was not a good idea.

What you save in energy you'll lose in disorganised workers blaming the change for coming in an hour early[:D]. Same time every year means no excuses, it doesn't matter a week here or there as long as it is consistent. IMHSVHO.

this is by far bushes most contribution to a better world. 3 states dont do it. IN(portions of), AZ, HI the daylight gets shorter- thats life.

You are correct, Muse. It's that hour of sleep they steal in the spring that starts the week off on the wrong foot. Daylight savings time is a good way to adapt civilization to the schedule of nature. I was just commenting on the particular timing for this year.

For me these time changes are highly psychological: I tend to ignore the fact I'm going into work an hour late but I always notice I'm leaving an hour later. When however the clocks go forward I concentrate on the fact I'm going in to work an hour early and don't really acknowledge that I'm leaving work an hour early. Glass is empty where’s the tap.

Polling stations are open all day and so all the votes I've ever participated in such as London Mayor, Local and National Elections, European Elections, I've always attended after work and I've never had to stand in line yet. Some people probably take the day off to vote but it usually only takes fifteen minutes and is a five minute walk down the road for me. I think it's probably more important that you don't have to go too far to vote and you won't be spending lots of time queuing in terms of voter apathy. Daylight saving probably has a tenuous link to voter apathy. The other biggest problem for voter apathy is the mental thought that you live in a true blue or true red area and since its first past the post your vote won't make an impact on the national result. My constituency is Labour it always has been, the national result like in the US relies on a small selection of swing constituencies and that is the biggest problem for voter apathy.
