Buy their oil and fuck the rest. At least that's what my Constitution says.

I no longer believe the good guy bad guy bullshit. When we tried to overthrow Chavez the PEOPLE put a stop to it and ousted our ousters. If someone came and overthrew Bush & Co I would not be so active, believe me.

Chavez may be an asshole, but he is their asshole, they picked him, they got him. Buy the oil and shut the fuck up.

Hugo Chavez has stolen billions from that Country. Maybe he should be helping the poor with the cash he has in overseas accounts..

Your evidence?

I remember rightwing Americans accusing a leftwing British politician of taking illegal money from Iraq and claiming to have evidence and when he went in front of the senate committee and asked for them to produce their evidence, Lord behold!!!! They couldn't!!!! Well there was a surprise.

not

Not a surprise, is it!  That's what radical socialists do, consolidate power, destroy the opposition and control peoples lives.

Like Pinochet, put in place with the help of the CIA? A great socialist, wasn't he  ?

According to these two articles I found:
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-112419
http://www.americanthinker.com/2006/09/democrats_and_the_antisemitism.html

Chavez enjoys the support of several U.S. Congressmen.  Also, it seems Jimmy Carter assissted in his first election by verifying the results (even thought there are questions about the legitimacy of the results.)

Hugo Chavez is my hero! I mean he's fucking awsome, he just tells everyone to F-Off. I always get a chuckel when I read about him in the Papers. Only Reason Bush does not like him because he knows he will never be as great as him, and crys him self to sleep thinking about it.

Strange how Chavez could fix his first election when he wasn't even in power. As far as I can tell it is only rightwing Americans that are claiming the result was questionable.

Aside from Congressman Frank I have never heard much of the others and surprise, surprise his strongest relationship is with of all people a Republican Rep. from North Carolina. Of course the source had to post a photo of one of the Congressman standing next to Obama....and the  report was done in 2003.

I still dislike the Communist Bastard...just pointing out the facts that it isn't just liberals....and since 2003 even they might have changed thier minds?

OK, let's get a bit of perspective.

Chavez wants to jail a rival, but what if the guy really is a crook ?

Chavez decided to refuse to renew a TV station license because they slanted the news very badly during the US coup perpetrated by our CIA to oust him.

None of that is OK, he must go, but it is OK for us to go and use military force to get rid of him, and install a government, recognize it within minutes and always villify Chavez while we supported murderers like Ariel Sharon.

This not only empowered the People of Venezuela, but emboldened them to overthrow the overthrowers and restore Chavez to power.

Good going neocons, it wasn't good enough to go halfway across the world and kick bees nests off of trees so to speak, now we need to make "friends" on our own continent ? Yup, good lookin out, smart people. Just look at the results.

I think if we just mind our own business we would be fine, if not for all the enemies we have made.  Wonder why I can't vote for McCain.

I've no love for Chavez but the rightwingers that are accusing him of all sorts of crimes HE MIGHT DO and they turned a blind eye to rightwing dictators who ACTUALLY murdered innocent people, is just totally disingenuous of them. They are attacking him not because he is a dictator because he isn't but because they dont like anyone on the left, even if it was Jesus, while they don't mind murdering rightwing dictators.

Owner, not really.
What they do in foreign countries is their business not mine.
This thread is a good argument for isolationism.

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez threatened on Saturday to imprison his main political rival, intensifying a campaign against a man he calls a crime boss just a month before he faces tough regional elections.

Opposition leader Manuel Rosales, who lost to Chavez in the 2006 presidential vote, is governor of the oil producing state of Zulia and is running for mayor of its capital Maracaibo.

"I am determined to put Manuel Rosales behind bars. A swine like that has to be in prison," Chavez said.

I think you enjoy not understanding why there are reactions against the rightwing in S America. Go there. Look at the poverty, the exploitation, the subjugation of the poor. Look at the super rich hidden in their villas behind high fences, with private armies to protect them from the people they have robbed. Only rightwing Americans could possibly not see the injustice that causes the lurch of the poor towards the far left. America loves South American dictators and murderers, as long as they are of the rightwing variety of course. I don't remember Americans complaining about Pinoche or Galteiri when they were murdering their own people. Chavez isn't murdering his own people but do you notice how he gets more of a reaction from America than the two mass murderers did?

I understand full well the exploitation of people in all the countries south of the Rio Grande..from Mexico to Chile
However, I thought this thread topic was about Chavez seeking to imprison opposition, and that's what my comments addressed.  If you want to discuss Chile that might be an interesting thread.  Personally, I think power politics involves forming coalitions of friendly like minded people, and unfriendly people who are unfriendly towards our enemies too.  Along those lines,I would send money to support the overthrow of Chavez the way the United States supported the overthrow of Allende by Pinochet.  Not ideal, not the best of all worlds...but I would rather "our guy" in there than a Marxist.
And no, I don't think the killing of innocent people who are generally apolitical is tolerable,  and I would condemn those actions from either a Marxist like Allende, a Fascist like Pinochet....or a radical terrorist who thinks he is above the law, and the ends justify the means. It's a nasty mean jungle out there...and life, unfortunately,  is not a "box of chocolates" for most of the worlds population.   Be well...
