subenigmatic -> Link between oral sex and cancer found (10/27/2008 11:27:39 PM)

This article caught my attention today, and served as a reminder that you really can't be too careful.  I haven't been able to access the original journal article, but as far as I can tell the study wasn't funded by Gardisil.

RainydayNE -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (10/28/2008 1:48:27 AM)

that is quite interesting

DavanKael -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (10/28/2008 9:12:02 AM)

I read a CDC article on this a few months ago.
Essentially, hpv can spread to the throat just as it can to the genital or anal areas.  If it's one of the high risk kinds known to cause cancer, it can cause cancer of the throat, penis, cervix, and/or anus.

Damn, can't we have any fun anymore without the worry of something bad?  Oh the hell with it... I am going to do what I want... I die, I die... but I had fun in the process!  (This doesn't mean I won't be careful... I just won't be afriad to LIVE!)

DavanKael -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (10/28/2008 6:33:05 PM)

If it's any comfort, Lockit, the current stats are the 80%-90% of people have, have had, or will have hpv.  It seems to be the 'common cold' of the sdt's.  Luckily, most forms don't seem to do anything at all.  And, even the ones that create symptoms usually do not manifest for more than 2 years.  And, diligence about paps and all that happy stuff helps to monitor cellular irregularities to head off cancer.  Oh, and there are more depthful tests than just paps for hpv now: one for the lower risk kinds (Generally, wart causing types) and one for the higher risk kinds (That can cause cellular irregularities and ultimately cancer potentially).  You have to request the tests; they don't just do them, especially if you have a normal pap.  My gyn knows I am a lunatic that insists on the latest and greatest in all testing, so she indulges me and I love her for it.  In some cities, they are doing anal paps to assess for hpv but my gyn could only tell me that it's a big thing in areas with a large gay population and she really didn't have any information on the efficacy or how-to.  I just assume everyone has hpv and have also learned that despite having 'the talk' with people, they are often either woefully under-educated about std's or simply don't care about what they may be exposing people to.  I'm thinking folks should consider trips to the health department or veinipuncture center of mutual choosing as potential dates.  Hpv's been rattling around for years; there's references to it in Roman Empire-era literature.  Nothin' new.

Lockit -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (10/29/2008 12:04:54 PM)

LOL.. thanks Davan!  I knew that, but you caught me bitching for the sake of bitching!  Aid's didn't stop me... my mom telling me men were like sailors and you ought to stay away from sailors... (dad was a sailor)... nope not even a threat of um's as you can see with my four... I tend to do what I want. hehe

What is new info to me is the herpies virus and how some are saying that most of society has some strain of it.  Very interesting...

I listened to a discussion on this earlier , on that new show "the Doctors" .   They were saying that the possibility of the hpv virus causing oral cancers increases with frequency of oral sex - especially in those that have had six or more partners .   There would seem to be a cumulative aspect here , as I long ago heard warnings of a higher risk for cervical cancer in those with multiple (vaginal) sex partners .
While I don't want to be paranoid - it definitely does seem wise to be cautious, and carefully assess those you choose to be intimate with . [>:]

panthersub -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (11/3/2008 11:47:51 AM)

Now i thought it was only if you had 6 or more partners.

candystripper -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (11/3/2008 4:27:31 PM)

Well, it's not good news.  Still, it did take 30 years for the rate to double, and now affects only 34,000 people -- assuming I'm reading this properly..  And only 39% percent of the cases are HPV-related.

The total U.S. population is 305 million -- assuming that is the group the study referenced.

I certainly don't mean people should not be concerned about emerging stds until they have reached epidemic portions -- just that it may be too soon to refuse to ever give anyone else a bj again.

I feel truely sad about the inhibitions people are forced now to adopt in order to stay safe.  Ya, I do think it s time to get tested -- extensively -- with a new partner and then together decide what risks intimacy may present -- but, hell, what a turn-off.

Soo..... there's still no brilliant way to test for it right?

I guess I need to see about getting that Gardasil ... ugh. My pocket is a little lean for that...

I believe it was the great American philosopher Carlin who warned us:
Saliva causes throat cancer.  But only when taken in small doses over a long period of time...

Damn medical community takin' all our fun away...

greetings to all,

(please forgive me for slightly derailing the thread, but...)

Cali, you are officially the first person here on Collarme to make me nearly choke on my coffee (you've made my day).  Thanks for the laugh!

well wishes,

DavanKael -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (11/3/2008 6:40:48 PM)

Hi,Lockit----
Just wanted to correct: you said that I asserted that the vast majority of people have some form of herpes virus.  That's not what I said.  I was speaking of Hpv, not Hsv (which is what herpes is and there are 2 types).  Hpv is human papilloma virus, a different virus entirely (There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 different types, about 10% of the types can cause warts, about 10% of the types can cause cancer, and the rest don't seem to do anything at all, as far as science can tell right now).  The stats I quoted above are related to hpv.

Do you have any insurence babe? Mine is covering my shots.

Alighierisquest -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (11/5/2008 3:36:59 PM)

I knew I shouldn't have looked, but *sigh* I did.

sexypet -> RE: Link between oral sex and cancer found (11/9/2008 9:23:34 PM)

-Generally, insurance will only cover shots given to those age 26 and under.

-i was denied the shot because i am beyond the "conventional age of marriage" (direct quote from Blue Cross).  LOL.  Fuck them.  Doc quoted me $500 for the shot.  Massachusetts does not offer HPV type testing.  They test for all 64 types at once.

- Over 6 partners?  i am totally fucked.
