MstrssScarlet -> Opinions Wanted (10/28/2008 7:38:34 PM)

Because of recent health issues that don't seem to be getting any better, I'm trying to come up with a new way to earn a little extra income.  I've had experience making different things in the past and I'm wondering if I could pervert some of it to making something lifestyle oriented.  I know how to work with wood, ceramics, and leather.  Some ideas I've had are things like little laquered jewelry boxes for your nipple jewelry or for presenting a collar.  They could be personalized for your submissive or dom(me) and you wouldn't have to worry about what I thought like you would in a vanilla store.  I've also done ceramic artwork, but I wonder if people would buy a lifestyle piece of work or simply look at it and think "Where the hell would I put that?"  I've done some leather tooling and thought about making personalized collars.  Does any of this sound appealling to anyone?  Do you have a better idea?  All opinions welcomed.

I think the personalized thing is absolutely lovely. I myself have no issue with displaying kinky art if I really like it - other than the HUGE issue of getting it past Master *grin*
I do have to admit - in order to get a buisness going, I think you are going to have to do enough generec pieces to front your store (in the online sense) rather you are using Ebay, KinkAuctions (or whatever they call themselves), building a website or whatever.
I think building a website is your best bet (cause that in no way keeps you from selling on an auction site, as well.) So do up plenty of general pieces, and work on building an inviting website, and include plenty of mention of the custom pieces you will be happy to do. As you get orders to make custom pieces, ask permission from the commisoner of the piece to take a pic and put it in a 'gallery' on your website. YOu can even start with a gallery if you have a few pics of things you have done.

etsy is a great place for handmade thingamabobs :)  (probably more suitable for generic "getting started" pieces)

I would undoubtedly want to start selling on ebay or a kink friendly version of it.  I hadn't even really thought about a website, but that's an excellent idea.

Please, follow your muse ! I'm always on the prowl for something a bit 'different', something with taste and style. And, if there's me, there are a thousand others. Besides financial income, it could help heal in other ways. Lotsa Luck! [8D]

I've found some kink-worthy stuff on that site. (takes a bit of searching, but, it's there.)

Hi, Mistress Scarlet----
I am sorry to hear of your health issues.
Regarding the ceramics, I spoke with a girl recently who had a partner who made pottery sex toys.
Leather has huge options.
For boxes, larger, moreornate ones could be made for toy storage.
Marketing at local kink events can also be an option.
Good luck and wishes,
  Davan

You make an excellent point.  One of the problems I deal with is my inability to focus on things outside of my illness because it's so overwhelming.  There's very little I can do physically right now and I REALLY need a distraction.  One that makes me feel productive would be a bonus.

I might suggest that you pick an eBay name that makes your website easy to find, then you might also always put a link to your site in every reply, use the auction sites for getting a name and making your brand known, keep selling there even if your site gets orders, but see it as a marketing tool. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, it is actually very close to my line of work and I do love what I do.

Another idea would be possibly custom made fetish gear for plus sizes, so many ladies complain that the usual fetish clothes are only come in small sizes.

Hope that helped

DelilahDeb -> RE: Opinions Wanted (10/30/2008 1:36:43 AM)

Something that I've owned a couple of in my life are tooled leather waist cinchers. (It does take some investment in leather.) Take heavy brown kraft paper (you can buy it ant office supply & shipping stores) and use that to cut experimental shapes and sizes and widths. My most recent purchase is a very simple design of two pieces (why corsets used to be called a pair of corsets, because each have was "a corset", just as trousers are alwas a pair, one to each leg). It laces up the back as well as up the front, which makes it adjustable to widening/slimming waistlines. About 6 inches wide at the back, and most of the way round to where it each half widens out like the bell of a trumpet (symmetrically) to about 9 inches wide at the front lacing.

The most gorgeous belt/cincher I ever had like that was a much lovelier design, with a sort of mild S-curve from below the waist in back to above the (iliac) crest of the hipbone as it comes around, and then widened sinuously to a rounded center front lacing. The back of that was permanently laced (fancily) together with good leather lacing, and the thing that sold it was the Celitic knotwork interlaced dragons tooled (actually die-stamped) symmetrically on the two halves of the stiff leather. I'd pay good money to have one that fit me made up and tooled to a design that I liked. I still have it, but that was 50 pounts ago, and there's no room vertically between my ribs and my hips to tightlace more than an inch or so.

Lady Delilah Deb

P.s. Part of what might make this a good venture is the number of plus, minus, and other-sized people who cannot afford a custom fitted corset. You can keep the construction simple because there's only the two identical (mirror image) pieces of leather to cut. Once you have made up your paper pattern pieces, ideally on friends in a scattering of sizes with various figure challenges (top heavy, bottom heavy, long waisted, short waisted, no waisted, hourglass figure, Willendorff-shaped, titless wonders, stegeoptygous, transgendered, cross-dresser, scoliosis…), you can make one for yourself to set folks drooling, maybe give one as a give or at cost to a widely travelled domina. Marketing 101.

Is that for those who are into edge play?
Sounds dangerous!!

MstrssScarlet -> RE: Opinions Wanted (10/30/2008 7:38:12 PM)

Sewing is not one of my strong points.  I know how to do it, but I don't enjoy it and I'm certainly not qualified to custom make fetish garments.  My experience with leather is not extensive enough to make those wonderful corsets that were described.  I was thinking more along the lines of custom leather collars.  Everywhere I go, I see those black dog collars that are so impersonal.   Here's one of my thoughts:
A slightly narrower collar tooled with designs picked by the dom(me) and his/her pet name for the submissive carved into the front.  The leather can be stained just like wood in different shades of brown or the standard black.  It could even be left the light natural color.  The collar would be gift boxed in a wooden box with a finish also chosen by the dominant (natural, oak, cherry, ebony, etc.).  The box could also be decorated and personalized.  All of these things I can do and do well.

If I were going to do something in ceramics, I would probably stick to artwork.  I would have to find a source for the "greenware" that could be perverted without too much work.  (The addition of chains is simple - changing the entire pose is not.)  It would only have to be fired once - still in it's vanilla stage.  I have special paints that do not need to be fired and can be directly applied to the piece after one firing.  Once I have everything the way I want it, I simply spray it with a special sealer and they're good to go.  You can even wipe them down with a damp cloth if desired.

FourQ -> RE: Opinions Wanted (10/31/2008 5:15:41 PM)

A simple request, as a veteran to the internet I've found more and more sites who profusely refuse to ship overseas.  In short, to the US only or at a push, Canada.

We Brits like our kink too.  Whatever you do, please make it available to Europe as although we Brits are usually a reserved race publicly, to those who know us we're as kinky as it gets.

Cheers and good luck.

Uh oh - now you've got me thinking: a kink-friendly version of eBay...

kinkbay? nah...
fetbay? nah...

gotta work on that...

There is already one. I don't remember the name. It's kinda lame.

Dave - did you ever consider making a living in adcopy? cause you seem to be really good at coming up with biz names, LOL
