This is so wonderful to read. I'm glad that folks get the joy of giving and the folks that felt a little nudge, I hope you listen to your little nudge. It is an amazing feeling. Over the decades I have given whatever I had to give when it was needed. I've always enjoyed the high I get from seeing someone's face brighten, especially when they don't know I was the one who gave. Most of the time I've had to imagine that sight because I'm not there. I tried to instill this spirit in my daughter & I do think that she learned compassion for other living things in that way. I do feel badly when I see someone in need & I can't help them, but there comes a time when I can help someone else. And the ones I can't help, I pray for & believe that they get the help they need that way.

I have been helping a small group with a toy drive every Yule. Not just making donations but charging up a couple of toy collector groups I know of. To my suprise at a pride day last summer the organizer introduced me at a conventions as the one responsible for keeping the program going.

Honestly I am always so busy doing for animals it rarely occurs to me to do something for people.

Doing something for animals is nothing to sneeze at. Well, unless you're allergic or something! I adore animals & do for them when I can & I adore people who do for animals too!! The world needs folks like you.

Thank you! It is very painful sometimes. All the ones you can't help. I think most people have no idea. I don't think most people who like animals want to know, and people who don't like animals don't care.

I agree with you there, moonvine. I have a Katrina rescue dog, but he was feral before the hurricane. He's the big joy of my life. I set out to find him a kitten for company & ended up bringing the whole family home because they were all black cats & Hallowe'en was coming up. My neighbor took the momcat & got her spayed. I took the 2 baby boys. I know that I can't keep both of them, but at least I saved them from any Hallowe'en weirdness this year. I can't remember the last time that I got a pet who wasn't a rescue. I know that these guys have souls & I have a very hard time turning any of them away. But what good can I do them if I can't afford their upkeep. So I mostly just try to educate others & try to get them to adopt & neuter & help stop the bad stuff in that way.

It's been my experience that giving actually brings me even more in return. My friends, family & I give to each other all the time, so it's too much to list here, but some of the things that come to mind are: * I worked an event for the Boys & Girls club in Sacramento, in which I joined a handful of other volunteers to work with a gazillion youngsters. It was an arts & crafts day where we taught them to make musical instruments and decorate them. It was one of the most fun (and exhausting!) days I have had all year. * I give money to homeless people. Having been wiped out financially myself, I still have more than they do in that regard. * I gave a Christmas tree to a children's shelter in San Jose. * I'm on a distribution list for a missing & exploited children's organization and I hang posters of missing ones. * I donate to WEAVE (Women Escaping A Violent Environment) In the big scope of things, it doesn't take a whole lot of effort, and makes a huge difference to others. I've been blessed a million times over since doing these things, so I'll just keep on doing them, and urging others to do the same. Great thread, sunshinemiss!!

I've done the Christmas shopping run with various disabled groups. It changes your Christmas when someone who has been bedridden for years can be pushed around the shops (which open solely for the disabled off hours) and have them able to take their time over their choices. One old lady taught me how to squeeze melons to see if they're good (so it wasn't altogether a kink free evening).

I am on a music forum and one of the young people was asking us for advice on how much to bid for a rare cd by a band we love. I sent her a spare copy that I had (I posted it yesterday and it arrived today - way to go Australia Post) and she was over the moon. One of the things I most love giving is a smile...I decided a year or two ago to smile more at strangers .... I hope that this tiny gesture brightens up their day.

What else should I have to do? smirk But at any rate... as an abuse survivor as a child, in just about every way, my kids' friends know that this is a safe place to regroup, regardless of who comes for them, providing, of course, that there is proof of said abuse and not just teenage angst about being grounded... granted, it does blow up in my face from time to time, but oh well... other than that, I do my absolute best to insure that my spawn are at least going to be productive members of society, whenever I get around to kicking them out of the house and make them be grown ups and what not...
