Hi folks,
In the midst of the cold weather up here in the USA, I thought we could talk about something to warm our hearts.... giving for the joy of giving.

I'm having my aunt and uncle's dogs groomed. It's a big surprise for them cause they need a new groomer.

What is something nice you've done for folks just to make them happy?

i sometimes leave little notes in my childrens back packs to tell them just how special they are. i sneak in and cleaned my cousins house. i love doing those little things, like bringing my guy a warm fresh out of the dryer towel when its cold.

It is the time of year we start up with the seasonal giving. The Good Neighbor program is what I get into.
It is an organization that works for the local community all year round. Though on the holidays they provide..rent..utilities...gifts..and a holiday dinner to all who cannot afford it.

We choose to adopt a family. Or several. This year we are adopting 5 ourselves. You get a shopping list of all family members. Go shopping for them. What they need and want, sizes..etc.
We usually also purchase them a gift certificate to a local grocery store for a holiday dinner. The program itself gives out food and clothing to those registered.

It's a worthwhile cause. Something I won't ever not participate in.

Answering the OP...

Seriously...

i work with mentally and physically challenged adults. Many of these folks are forgotten by family members. A developmentally disabled person who cannot speak, can point out their birthday on a calandar in some cases.

When the birthdays of several of my clients roll around, i take my kids(sometimes)...we buy them a gift, and balloons, and go to their birthday parties. We act as their family. This is "off the clock". When Christmas, or Halloween come along, same thing. Even for the rare sad occasion, funerals. Sometimes the staff and professionals working with these people are the only loved ones they have.(though i leave the UM's home for those)

My Sir says there really no such thing as true altruism: the feeling of doing good is actually a reward. i know the feeling of making people smile, and teaching my kids the beauty in all people...that's priceless!

Think of it this way. It is the way I think about life. I'm comfortable now. I've always worked hard.
Yet, I grew up with siblings. My parents took in foster kids because a friend of my brother threw her son into the street.

Anyway, at any given time we can be ripped off..lose our job..what have you. End up being the one who needs help.

So, Karma can be a bitch..help those who need it. As long as you can afford to yourself. Even if we have no money we can still volunteer our time to help someone else.

My Actual Birthday was October 27th and I thought it would be nice to bring all the guys in the Shop a Liter of Soda and a package of cookies.

For Christmas I am getting everyone in the Shop a little something.

And as an everyday I choose to wear pants to work so I am always in the giving mood.

I provide spontaneous full meals for co-workers.
I take vacations w/my grandum so he can have his own time & not have to worry about his little sisters bugging him ;)
I had originally listed my volunteer activities both past/present then realized it sounded too much like my resume' so I deleted it

I paid for my Fathers cremation. Sounds kinda odd, but he's dying and doesn't have the funds to do it... Now he doesn't have that to worry about. I'm staying in California with him, and when I tell you these are indeed special times.... it's an extreme understatement. I feel so very blessed to be by his side.

After thinking about this post I don't go out of my way to do good however with the woman by my side we pick some angels off the Christmas tree each year and buy them gifts and shes always baking and taking cakes cookies jams and jelly's etc to the neighbors..We loaded up the truck when we put our garden to bed this year and delivered watermelons and veggies to all the neighbors, ..Our main charities are the batter women shelters, the RED CROSS and save the children fund..so drop a dollar or two in the mail this day..bounty

-While helping Master's friend's family the day before his funeral, I realized that everyone, plus friends, would be back at the house after the service and no one had considered food. Being the nice jewish girl I am, I ALWAYS consider food. So, with the help of another (jewish) friend, we put together dinner for 30 in one afternoon. (we did BUY most of it- I'm helpful, not crazy)

-At any given time, there may be a kid who needs a place to stay sleeping on my couch. I was a run-away myself, so all my kids' friends know this is a safe house. The only question I ask is do their parents know they are safe? I've fed and housed various kids for up to three weeks at a time.

- Recently, I worked out a deal with a good friend to give her (rather than lend- which never works and ends friendships) the money she needs to finish getting her Trainer's Certificate so she can have steady work while she gets her Bachelor's. Her degree from her home country (Chad) isn't good enough for the powers that be.

Those are just some recent things off the top of my head.
