Hey everyone,

I've watched a plague of threads pop up, on topic after topic, mostly for folks to get in their digs, with little or shaky evidence, under the apparent conviction that somehow those slams serve some purpose (i.e., changing anyone's mind).

Honestly--do you believe the rest of the people here are just that foolish? That they'll just read your post, slap foreheads and change their minds? What does this accomplish?

And if you're smarter than everyone else, why do several million people disagree with you?

If all we're about is trading insults, then we're a sad lot.

But, although we have different "kinks," we're people who challenge the status quo. I hope to see that include discourse.

You may say I'm a dreamer--but I'm not the only one.

Wishing all well.

That could only happen with the necessary intellectual clout, but I find brutality doesn't make up for reasoning.

I would have thought that in the thread 'Men are Superior' a male bi-sexual switch might have brought more insight to bear. Sadly, being able to write one's name in the snow was the extent of his wiz dumb.

I seriously doubt anyone assumes that he or she is going to change anyone's way of thinking.  That's why it's called a "community" - so that we can find others of a like mind.  Sometimes, though, you have to wade through a lot of idiots to get to to them.

Nice try, but it looks like all your intentions accomplished was to reinforce your point.

Still, I'm down with puella - A for effort.

I posted to another thread this morning and made mention of the importance of approach. Rarely does coming at someone with the sharp end of the pitchfork create an atmosphere in which new information or learning finds fertile ground to take root. Most often the response to that approach (mine anyway) is to defend, or to make a counter attack or simply not engage at all. It gets awfully hard to move about when ones heels are dug so far into the dirt.

I'm aware of the above, and I do aspire to the ideal. No doubt I drop the ball more times than can be counted. But I'm trying.

I've changed my mind on issues throughout the years.
Sometimes because of something I've heard or read.
My stance on abortion for instance; when I was a teen, I was staunchly for that "right", in my 20's and 30's, staunchly against, and now, I see areas of grey...not just black and white.
So, yes, if one person can find something in what I write to help them clarify their beliefs, I feel it was worth taking the time to write.

Thanks, Christina.

That's encouraging, at least.

That is because there are millions and millions of idiots out there.... That is something people of every party can agree on can't they?

I've had my mind changed by reading a thread or even a post....maybe I'm just more wishy-washy.  I started off the election cycle a big McCain supporter, then read more and more about both candidates (sorry, not terribly interested in 3rd party candidates) and now I support Obama.

Could someone say something here to change my mind about, say, reproductive rights?  I do enjoy intellectual discussion of the matter, but like society at large, we so often disintegrate into insulting those who disagree (which I guess was the point of the Op)....I do think it's a shame that kinksters are not more open-minded sometimes, but I guess that's just human nature.

What I personally get a kick out of is the dellusion some people seem to have that posting here on CM is somehow going to affect the outcome of the election, etc.  If you really feel so passionately, have you tried volunteering?  Is there a yard sign on your lawn?  Have you contributed money to anyone's campaign?

I've worked several state wide campaigns both in Ohio and Florida; it's hard, thankless, difficult work that is sometimes mind-numbing (try stuffing 5,000 enverlopes some evening and you'll see what I mean), but to me that is putting your money and your time where you feel it belongs....and does bear fruit....as opposed to snarky bitching at people, which generally does not.

Agreed, and JJ's comment is telling too---people post to issues as if they are either/or, and that's not a discussion, especially given that all issues have a wide range of positions, stances, complications, implications and so forth.

Then there's tactics. I just saw another poster start a thread to ask about how people have changed their voting, and begins by patronizing all other posters and self-righteously insulting in advance anyone who might disagree with the OP's assumptions. Way to invite open, productive discussion!

There are, however, posters of all persuasions here whose opinions and stances I respect, read, and consider.

I am not sure exactly in what way my post was telling.... I was being pretty cynical in all my posts last night.

The issue that gets me is that political parties seem to want to make this all a "One Size Fits All" options. Either you are a Democrat and have your agenda usually defined by the party or you are a Republican with their set agenda. Everyone complains about the other party and frankly unless I'm missing the boat here most seem to imply that the other party is just a bunch of Idiots.

I personally have gotten fed up with the entire political process. I really don't have any faith that whoever is elected is going to change all that much and make that big of a difference. And even if they do win - what do I care? I actually have views that fall on both sides of the parties. All I can hope is that whoever is elected at least picks one of the issues I agree with them on and fix it while trying to stay away from the issues I don't agree with them on.
That's of course assuming they do anything which again I really don't have much faith in happening.

JJ,

That's exactly the point: every claim is either/or--but reality is far more complicated than such false dilemmas.

i have most always voted pub, except i did vote for Clinton, but this election i voted libertarian.
i read & post here and other sites as well.  back in the summer i began questioning my reasons for supporting McCain so i researched each of the most popular candidates, pub/dem and found neither someone i wanted to vote for.

that is when i realized....we are all different and we do not always fit perfectly like a puzzle.  i lean dem on some issues, pub on others, and truly feel at home with the lib candidate because i truly believe in small government & state rights.

CM posters helped to make me think and re-evaluate!

I was wondering this same thing earlier today.  I've watched so many of the political threads go right down the shitter in the past several weeks, and I thought it was a real waste of time to be posting some of the venom that has been tossed back and forth here when those hours could have been used helping your candidate's campaign.  I only recently chose whom I was going to vote for because like many Independents, I feel strongly about issues on both sides of the aisle.  I can say this... once I decided I was going to support Obama, I attended his rally in Leesburg, VA with my youngest, and signed up to do volunteer work in the local office tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday to show my support, and to show my kids that supporting a candidate is more than voting, it's putting in some time to back up your decision.
