ORIGINAL: cloudboy I thought that this was pretty funny: The state that she (Palin) governs has no income or sales tax. Instead, it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields. The proceeds finance the government’s activities and enable it to issue a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state. One of the reasons Palin has been a popular governor is that she added an extra twelve hundred dollars to this year’s check, bringing the per-person total to $3,269. A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” I think it was brilliant and the American way. Palin re-negotiated the deal that the oil companies had made with the previous Alaskan politicians, some of who she ran out of office, got the money in the treasury and gave it back to the people on whose land the oil companies drill. That is how government should work. Contrast that with what would occur in an Obama "redistribution" administration. Barack would impose a windfall profit tax on oil companies, get the money in Washington, D.C., and than decide how that money is to be spent for our good since we don't know what is for our good, I guess. I think I would prefer to get that check from Palin and decide how I would want to spend the money...dont you?
