Then there's this by Haddaway. I admit I have very strong feelings of antipathy towards this song. When I first settled in Poland I shared an apartment in the centre of a city called Poznan, sharing with a couple of Poles, a Norwegian and a Swede. The apartment was in the centre of the city not far from an open street market where this dude sold cassettes. Now this was back in 1994 and there wasn't much of a music industry and so all the casette tapes sold were pirate copies. During my years in Poland I must have bought over a thousand of these cassettes. But anyway this dude sold cassettes at the local bazaar and this was the song he played, interminably, over two years - day in, day out, the casette player cranked up loud, and he played it again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again. Even when the Russian stallholders nikced his casette player he managed to get a new one and he was playing this song. Now whenever I hear this song I think almost instinctively about mayonaisse and coffee. You see, living with Scandinavians in a flat which you shared, you drank a lot of coffee, and we were always buying the stuff... oh and mayo, which would go on everything, up to and including breakfast cereal.
