How many would use it? Would it deter rapists if enough people used them?

Anti-rape condom aims to stop sexual assaults
South African inventor creates 'rapex' device fitted with hooks and barbs
KLEINMOND, South Africa - A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker’s penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

“Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time,” Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex," a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

If someone takes advantage of a woman like that they got what's coming to them. My punishment would be a lot harsher than a rape condom.

ToServeIsToLive -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/15/2005 8:51:04 AM)

i'll bring up the point i mentioned in a similar thread... Ok, lets look at the situation. There's a desperate guy who probably went into the crime thinking he might have to kill his victom to get away with what he's doing. He's almost definitly is not in his most calm mindset. The gameplan for the victom is to cause painful damage, but do nothing that would inhibite his ability to kill her... i'd rather see women carrying tasers and stunguns than devices meant to enrage people who hold the victoms lives in their hands.

I agree with this. Those who have experienced rape during which the rapist is in a rage know that it is best to just do as he asks and not fight back. Once you try to fight back you are one step closer to serious injury ot death.

If you read the link I provided this condom does incapacitate the attacker. There are spikes in the condom that adheres to his penis. The only way to get it off is by going to the ER and having it surgically removed.
So, that amount of pain at least according to every man I have ever spoken to in my life. He isn't going to be fighting you anymore.

quietkitten -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/15/2005 1:34:38 PM)

If a rapist is aware this device exists... there is nothing stopping him from incapacitating his victim and removing it before he rapes her.

Yup. Sounds like a job for a sawed off broomstick.

BTW, sub4hire, about that play-rape scene we were discussing....er, no.

True, however somehow in my mind I think rapists are stupid. I may be wrong but its what I believe.
If I were young and liked to hang out at parties. I'd definately be looking into this condom.

quietkitten -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/15/2005 2:28:10 PM)

I definitely think it is a good idea. I just don't think it is foolproof.

Nothing is foolproof. However, in thinking about this condom. So, it is latex of some sort. Has spikes inside, apparently pretty deadly ones if it has to be surgically removed.
Would'nt they puncture the condom? What would the sensation be like walking around?
Orgasms?

windy135 -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/15/2005 3:20:16 PM)

I've heard of this and think it's interesting. If it works great.. sadly in my case .. You can't rape the willing !

dekley -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/15/2005 6:17:44 PM)

Unfortunately, the rapist would probably sue his victim. And, as sad as it seems, in this day and age anyway, he'd stand a better than even chance of winning.

I am not a lawyer, but...

I know that you can't set booby traps in your own home to ward off would-be thieves - even if there is a sign warning them of the danger of breaking into the building. The problem is that you can't use force enough to hurt someone unless you are personally faced with bodily injury. The law cares that you might get robbed, but only after the fact and only to the extent of prosecuting a charge for theft. No thief is going to face physical injury as a penalty for stealing your piggy bank.

On the other hand...

Booby-trapping your own person raises the issue of self-defense. The claim would have to be that it was a forced entry into the woman's body - the nasty condom is an act of self-defense. Certainly anyone is allowed to defend their own person even to the point of using deadly force. Seems fair enough to me.

On the other hand...

Any evidence that the would-be rapist was lured into this man-trap would most likely signal a charge against the woman for assault. With rape charges being generally pretty hard to prove, I think this could go very badly for a woman facing a U.S. jury. I know rape is a frequent enough occurence to cause people considerable concern. But consider the mentality of the woman that is walking around with this thing inside of her 24/7 - just on the off chance she might get raped. It just seems wrong. I can't imagine any woman I know using this thing all the time to protect herself.

There's most likely another hand...

I think you'd only use it in situations where you would have a higher chance of rape. Bars. clubs..walking alone in the dark..etc

SadistDave -> RE: Anti Rape Condom (12/16/2005 12:58:17 PM)

What I'm curious about is it's construction. The article describes it as looking like a tampon. That brings up a few questions.

Why couldn't a rapist just pull the thing out by the string?

Is the device strong enough to withstand a forcible removal without coming apart inside a woman? Wouldn't it defeat the purpose of the device if the barbs rend the flesh of her vaginal wall as the unit is literally torn from her body?

AIDS and a few other STDs are passed through the blood. Considering that, would you really want a strangers bleeding cock inside you?

Are these things reusable, or disposable. If they are reusable, then what problems might arise from toxicology, improper cleaning of the device, etc.. Sure, the manufacturers say it's safe, but they say that about a lot of things that later turn out to be unsafe. Look at the IUD, phen phen, etc..

Have these things been tested on human beings? If so, wouldn't the testing process itself be illegal? If not, how does anyone know if the thing even works?

Food for thought...

When I was overseas during the 60s there were always rumors floating around that some Vietnamese women (who obviously sympathized with the North) used a similar device that employed razor blades. They'd lure an unsuspecting GI, and of course the GI would be in for a rude and painful awakening. I always kind of doubted that such rumors were true, but who knows for sure.

This invention is interesting. However, if i felt i was at risk, i'd prefer a switchblade or a gun; why allow him to get you down and crawl over top of you? Shoot him when it's obvious what he has in mind..
