I was talking to a friend about when I lost my virginity (at 17 for the curious) after talking about it, I came up with a question, which is still being debated between me and my friend

If you have sex for the first time but it doesn't break the hymen, does is still count as having sex?

It's not possible for a penis to enter you without breaking the hymen.
Some people are mistaken the the hymen is a few inches inside, but it is at the very opening of the vagina. Most women break it accidentally when washing, masturbating or if they insert a tampon it will definitely be broken. Some women are born without one.

It may tear and not completely break away. But a virgin is someone who has been penetrated. It actually has nothing to do with whether or not you have an intact hymen.

well.. its not exactly true that a tampon will break the hymen.

Awoman that is still a virgin..still has her monthly Menustration, and that is because there is a small hole in the center of the hymen that allows the blood to flow out.

And so the theory is that, a female that is still a virgin, can STILL use tampons by being very careful, and using the slimest size they manufacture, to find that small hole in the middle of her hymen and place the tampon in there.

i never had experience in it myself, because i didnt start wearing tampons, before i had already lost my virginity, BUT.. when my 20 year old... needed to wear something back when she was still in highschool, and had to swim on pool days, well i told her how to wear a tampon, while still being a virgin. She was able, as far as she told me, that she was able to keep her hymen intact that way..so it DOES work.

Do you want it to count as having sex?  I may be reading it wrong but this sounds like one of those questions like...if I hold is hand are we engaged? 
The old tales we used to hear and as we age we realize they weren't tales at all but true stories.

Not sure about that, as all hymens are different, and I distinctively remember finding myself on the floor after the insertion - I fainted from shock... so the jury's still out there.

If a penis enters a vagina it is having sex, whether the hymen is broken or not.  I don't consider insertions before that to be "losing virginity" (I actually tore my hymen when inserting a tampon at 14).  As far as I'm concerned, I lost my virginity to my childhood friend when I was 18.

The depends on your defination of sex.

I took a 400 level class on human sexuality and our class failed to come up with a defination sex we could all agree with. If sex is "penis in vagina" then "penis in ass" isn't sex and lesbians just aren't having anything. If losing one's virginity is having the hyman broken, what about women who are born without one (and no, not every woman is born with one)? Or those women who, like me, did a lot of sports and horseback riding and therefore the hyman was broken without anything ever being inside the vagina? Does that mean that a woman can give 1,000 blowjobs, be titty-fucked 50,000 times and still be a pure virgin?

It's all in one's point of view. Personally, I think if the erection went in the vagina you aren't a virgin anymore and you definately had sex - unless it was rape. And then, while one may not be a virgin medically, I just don't count it.

yes.  it also counts as "having sex" if you don't get pregnant, don't come or use another orifice instead of the vagina.

I lost my virgnity to a very tall Italian girl when I was fourteen. I can still feel her tits on my head some twenty eight years later (I'll look and make sure they're not still there) You never forget your first. Well that was my first apart from what I did in the bath with the unscrewed recorder barrel, or the tight rubber glove finger, or the neck of the hot water bottle, or the two balloons sellotaped together.

In such cultures as want proof of virginity, they use examination of the hymen, to confirm that it is intact.  So, although it is not actually an accurate method, an intact hymen is often thought of as proof of virginity.  It is not what constitutes virginity.

As to what it is to be a virgin, usually, people consider whether or not a person's had genital intercourse - insertion of the penis - to determine virginity.  I'm not sure if anyone consideres insertion of other objects to be losing one's virginity, although it would be likely to break the hymen and ruin the supposed "proof" of virginity.

i knew there was a reason we had a connection...im fairly sure he took mine too....i called the company to complain and they sent me coupons for more disappointment and selfesteem issues.
