i've never tried leather, although i lust for one. i bought mine online from Frederick's of Hollywood. they're good quality, has 4 plastic bones in it, i ordered it in my bra band size.  i wash it with TLC by hand. i'm a bbw as well...they fit lovely and feel so sexy against my skin.

Depends on what you're planning on doing with it.

Real corsets have steel stays and the number depends on the style and size of the corset. There are also different styles and silhouettes. You have waist cinchers and under bust and also over bust which can be with or without shoulder straps.

If you're planning on corset training or something that's worn for long periods of time, cotton is the best option. Satin or brocade with cotton lining would be next on my list.

Leather tends to be hot and would be last on my list for long term wear. It's good for short periods of time.

There are companies that make good quality custom corsets like: http://www.meschantes.com/

Companies like Vollers make good off the rack corsets.

I do alot of period clothing things, and with corsets the answer is what do you want?  do you want a flat bust with huge cleavage spilling out the top, or a molded corset that has a specific spot for your boobs.  I know you asked not to be given sites but this site does have a good illustration of the types of corsets avalible http://www.romantasy.com/index.html?BodyURL=ZXQ/cyboutique/style_for_me.html  I prefere either an Edwardian corse or a hybrid of an edwardian botton with an 18th centurty top cause I think the srtigh across tops make my boobs look better and the longer style corset is more comfortable for me becuase my waist is naturally small I can bring a wait corset in quite far, but then it cuts as my huge hips come out.  I'm BBW as well ... 38G  and I would not recommend bying anything but a ribbon or 1901 style corset off the rack.  Corsets really need to be custom made.  The Fredircks of hollywood type is fine if you don't expect th garment to do any really shapeing but that plasitc boning is not very strong and wears out quickly.  I would not advise bying anything that doesn't have steel bones unless it's leather.  If you are planning to make it look for historical patterns via Simplicity, Butternik or Past Times Patterns, if it's called a bodice or vest in the pattern that tells you the garment is for show and offers no support.

Leather vs fabric is largly a function of the look you are trying to achaive.  A soft leather will function like any other fabric, and should genreally be lined with fabric if it's going to get any hard wear.  Hard leather or top hide corsets should ALWYAS be custom work as they need to be molded to *your* body.  whith these boneing is less importtant because the rgigdity of the leather provides the support.  some places will do hybrid in which top hide strips are sewn to under corsets of fabric.  Remeber leather is harder to clean, though all good corsets should be drycleaned.

I agree with Oside- are you looking for a fashion corset to wear out to a party night?  Or are you looking for a serious lifelong investment piece?  Or are you looking to actually train yourself in corsetry and wear one nearly constantly?  Once you define the purpose, then you can focus your research.

You should always wear something under it, to keep skin oils and dirt off your corset.  Historically, it would be a lightweight linen chemise, but you can wear any shirt under it that you like.  Something see-through and gauzy is usually pretty.

the best thing to do would be either make one for yourself, or have one made, specifically to your measurements.

it depends on how long you intend to wear it, what the weather is like and your own personal comfort/fashion level.

either a lightweight chemise or nothing at all.

depending on the fabric/materials it is made from, this slave hand-cleans it with an appropriate cleanser, usually something gentle like woolite.

find someone willing to work with odd sizes/someone who will do custom work/do it yourself.

the following website is an excellent resource for supplies as well as how-to books and videos for corsetmaking:

Either.  Just personal choice.

Anything you want.  You can buy corset liners if you are just wearing it alone.

Depends on the corset and the fabric.  Heavy steel boned need to be dry cleaned.  Crappy plastic boning can be hand washed but I wouldn't recommend it.

If you are wearing a light steel boned or fashion corset you buy your size.  If you go for a heavy steel corset you get one that is about 4-6 inches smaller which is for waist training - start off from 4 inches smaller.  But ONLY use a heavy boned corset for this, fashion ones or the shit you get off ebay aren't appropriate.  Measure from the smallest part of your waist and check your length too.  Corsets measure length wise too.

Go by waist size not bust.  If your concerned about bust, try hgoing for an under bust one to begin with - it's a good way to start and get used to one.  Don't try and wear it for a day straight out - give yourself a good week of around 15 mins a time to 'break' it in and beging to get used to it.  It will mould to your shape and you can start off easy and tighten gradually.

spinninsweetness -> RE: corsets (11/1/2008 7:29:22 PM)

I wasnt sure if corsets were for me so I got a cheap one from ebay. Awful! I'm big too, I have.... curves anyway and the thing wasnt steel boned, its now unwearable. So I went back and got me aother one, ebay again, very cheap. Lovely! It got me used to wearing one, but its too long for a shortarse like me. So I got one at a fetish expo, this time an underbust. Again, not made for me or anything but very wearable to clubs and stuff, and both are steel boned so I can tightlace. And I love it! Considering getting one custom.

But because I only got cheap ones to try, I'm not too fussed over care for them or anything. I would recoment trying a cheap one before going all out and custom-making, in order to find out what you prefer style wise. For example I always assumed I would want over bust to stop my bewbs escaping but under is fine, I wear a plain black bra under a white shirt or a black lacy top and it looks good.
