JustDarkness -> RE: A little geometry problem (10/31/2008 9:25:06 AM)

the start point is their only intersection .....so if B walked 2 days (1 from and 1 day back to start)....A has walked 2 days also (and would need an other 2 days to go back)

normally when you talk about "a day"walking you need speed of A and B too

By the way, my hidden, inner math-geek is coming out.  This discussion is sooooo turning me on!  LOL!

I think the question should have been ......
what speed relative to A should B travel so that A and B meet  at some point  A is not permitted to travel completely around the world or hide behind any obstacle.
the answer is A(s) multiplied by  (1 + 1.1414)
Where A(s) = A's speed

We've got Pythagoras to thank for that.

Ditto..
However, even though I rocked geometry back in the day, if I tried it now, I would give myself a headache.  I'm happy swooning over your inner math geek though!!!

One direction, B never intersects.

The other, doesn't matter, because either way, A is at the bar enjoying drinks with friends while B is still walking.

I have a problem i need some help on.

If you have two people who are standing in the same spot. They both walk off. One straight ahead and the other to the right 45 degrees. The one who went straight is A and the other is B. B walks for a full day and then turns back towards his original direction 45 degress and walks for another full day. After he finishes his path intersects with the path of A. It creates an iscoceles triangle. I need to know how long A walked to intersect with B.

go right 45 degrees then left 45 degrees doesn't make you parallel to the other plane of travel.

If you lay it out with a protractor, you'll see that I'm right. Honest. It looks like this:

First right 45 degrees:

Then left 45 degrees (from the course you're on) ends up like this:

Good point. I said in the other geometry question that the questions were imprecise and I then fell victim to slipshod thinking[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

If A and B want to meet..they should "communicate"  and walk to gether to the bar.
Or make an appointment about time and place :P

ps...this is not a geometry problem..as the question is unclear :P  It should have been "what is a clear deffinition of the problem"
To answer a question, the question has to be clear.

Dude....clearly the OP was meant as an ironic puzzle, a joke.

Laugh.

kdsub -> RE: A little geometry problem (10/31/2008 1:54:45 PM)

well...assuming a and b are walking the same speed then what part of a day is b ahead of a when a intersects b's path?

Butch

windchymes -> RE: A little geometry problem (10/31/2008 1:57:59 PM)

I drew pictures in the air with my hands and I came up with what kirata did.  But I'm still confused.

SimplyMichael -> RE: A little geometry problem (10/31/2008 2:08:02 PM)

Yeah, I thought each ended up turning 45 but B turned 45 in one direction and then 45 in the reverse thus cancelling out his turn.  That means they are parallel and don't intersect at all, unless of course only one has a leg shorter than the other and the short one is on the inside which would slowly bring them together as the inside leg would travel a shorter distance.

I was seeing it not as 45 degrees from the current path, but creating a 45 degree interior angle.  With the way it's worded (turning back 45 degrees), I see what you're saying.

JustDarkness -> RE: A little geometry problem (10/31/2008 2:20:00 PM)

turning back is always 180 degree ( or a multiple of it)..else it is not back..lol

so turning back 45 degrees is kinda weird.
unless it is...turning back..taking the same 45 degree angle with as origin start.
