I am drawing up plans for a single arm suspension frame.    My upright from the base , as drawn, is 5.5 feet, a 45 deg angle, and finally another 45 deg angle for the top piece in which a eyebolt is installed.  Total planned height is 7' 8.5"

The math problem I encounter is with the ?Pyragatheum? Theorem, stating  { A squared + B squared = C squared}  If my hypotneuse for a right angle triangle is 3 feet, how long are the legs of the triangle?

Or likewise, if my legs were 18", how long is my hyponeuse?  That would be 25.455 inches, right?

P.S.  If your legs are really 18 feet long, well, ahem, yanno.....lol

I'm sorry wulf, I'm not visualizing what you're saying.

Your figure of 25.455 inches appears to be correct.

I've found an excellent tool online that I frequently use when doing my own designs.  Go to this web page, enter whatever information you know about the triangle and it will fill in all the side and angles for you.

These maths questions are so imprecisely framed.
Anyway if you know the length of the hypotenuse. ie the longest bit = 3 feet  and you want a 45 degree angle
then the legs would each equal 3 divide by 1.414 feet.

In general the hypotenuse divided by 1.414.

Does the 5.5 in your post mean 5 feet 5 inches or 5 feet 6 inches.

On such a small scale, why not just measure?

Thank you all.  My numbers just weren't coming out right against my scale drawing, and now they're all fixed.

If the legs of the base extend out at least as far as the end of the top bar, then it shouldn't topple over.

Always measure twice, cut once!

And if it does topple, whip the slave for toppling it!

Actually in some areas of fine finish carpetry you actually measure once and cut twice.

Actually, the base will measure 7' x 6', and the two legs extending from the crossbar actually go past the crossbar so it roughly resembles an "H" with the crossbar running 1 foot from the top.  The whole thing will be made of 2.5" x.25" wall steel square tubing so it will be quite stable.

I have a shop that will weld it up for me if I provide detailed weld prints.  (told him it was for a heavy bag...)  Sucks having welding skills but no welder.

Problem is, it'll rust away before it gets used.  Sucks being single and our local group has pretty much fallen apart, so I guess this whole thing is pretty much moot at this point
