Space Station Trash to hit Earth

How do you all feel about throwing the garbage out in space to land somewhere on Earth. The article states that pieces may weigh up to 40 pounds. That's gonna hurt if it hits someone!

Should NASA be fined for littering?  This seems like poor judgement to me on the part of NASA and/or the astronauts.

Should NASA be fined for littering, yes, they should. Not only does it seem we are easy with littering the enviroment in which we live, but it seems space as well. I would not be surprised if  man has left trash on the moon, if indeed man actually in reality ever got there.

Why is it as a species we are so messy ? Animals don't leave trash about beyond shells of things they eat, the occaisional bit of fluff and their spoor.

Even pigs are cleaner.

I don't know what prompted them to toss out a piece that size. Maybe they couldn't dismantle it so the pieces were smaller and burned up on the atmosphere? I don't know enough about this sort of thing to hazard a guess as to ... what were they thinking. Maybe we'll get some space guru's in here to address it.

For anyone whose first thought was whether they might be able to see burning and breaking up, good news.

Fireballs are predicted for November 5-11.

Your right animals don't leave trash. In fact I can honestly say I have never seen an animal finish something and throw his trash on the ground for someone else to pick up. In fact, my last dog was so neat, she'd even lick the bowl when she was done eating and the time she got into the halloween candy, she ate it all, wrappers and everything.

Well, gosh, then we could all live like animals, naked and outside, and eat our food off the ground right after we killed it, so we wouldn't leave behind any trash either.  Except our spoor.

Naked and outside...now that's a nice visual.

Could you throw in some chains to appeal to my kinky side?

Well, not to completely dense about this, but from the inception of the space programs of any country, didn't the brainiacs remember 'what goes up must come down'?  What did they think was going to happen to all the stuff they launched into space?  Was it all supposed to stay out of the earth's gravitional field forever or something?

What was the plan?

P.S.  I was told once that in third world countries, there is no litter...not in the form of paper or metal, anyway.  The people scavenge for the stuff to such an extent it's just not lying around...so maybe litter isn't so much a function of being human as it is conspicious consumption?  Just wondering.

P.P.S.  I have two parakeets.  I think anyone who owns a bird will tell you some animals sure do litter.  Mine seem to be looking to get their seed all the way out to the front steps, lol.

ummm, they have de-orbited 3 space stations and had them burn up, and the parts that hit ended up in either ocean or in the Russian deserts. most things left up there burn up harmlessly, its bolts and such. Plus alot of the so called "trash" enables us to use the internets and cell phones and gps and other wonder conviences of modern life. oh...and while we're at it,  let fine the solar system for leaving bits of itself scattered everywhere, after all isn't that "trash" left over?
