I went to the used record store today and was (as usual) going through their collection of Laserdisks. I found several Disney's that I don't have and I was delighted.
I went up to pay and the employee looked at me and said "You know, I think that you are the last person on earth that actually owns these. Do you actually watch them?"
I was shocked! Of course I watch them, the picture and sound quality is better then anything else. Is it true though? Do I own the last remaining Laserdisk player? Am I the last person on earth that appreciates the quality of this format of video?
I can't be.

They still sell them but I think they are going to same way the beta tapes went when VHS took over.
Basically everything is on DVD now..just the better or cheaper product won out.

Can a laserdisk at least play a dvd?

Something soon will beat the DVD
Watch You'll see. We call it Technology.

Someday it will be a Chip in Your head
that will play movies.

But it isn't better, that's the thing. The picture and sound quality is much better and most new Laserdisks cost about $10, rather then the $20 or $25 that a new DVD usually costs.

But no, my Laserdisk player does not play DVDs and DVD players don't play Laserdisks there is too big of a size difference I think.

Can I pick the chip? Say something I can program with the flip of a button on my computer. Say...I've had a stressful day at work can I go to Alaska for the evening and gaze at the stars?

I had two of the predecessor of the laser disk (and VCRs for that matter). It was a big thing that had a slot in the front of it where you inserted the cartridge. The cartridge was actually a thin plastic sheath with a record inside it that the movie was cut on. They were made by RCA and most people I know have absolutely no clue what I am talking about. I think they called it a video disk player or something like that.

Whatever happened to Randolph Scott?

Minaturization and mass production overtook LaserDisks, quality is Job 99 in the world at present.

LP albums are gone as well.

So are high end Hi-Fi sound systems for the home, mostly.

I collect 78's you collect laserdisks.........

Welcome, old timer!

Proof positive that humans (particularly Americans) will forego quality for convenience every time. It was the same with the battle between Beta and VHS. Beta gave better quality but the folks hawking VHS made deals to put more movies out on their format. Therefore Beta eventually died on the vine. The technology exists to put hundreds of movies into one storage medium, similar to what MP3 did to music, and you would have your entire movie catalog on a drive, ready to play in an instant from your voice (thought?) activated entertainment system. As soon as they can figure out how to squeeze the maximum profit from such an arrangement it will become available for mass consumption.

This is the underlying struggle with many things is it not, FemDopmHouTX? We want quality and they need us to consume.
