YourhandMyAss -> Has any one had temporary hair dyes not work on their dark hair? (11/1/2008 1:36:39 PM)

I've been looking at a lot of dyes and a lot of reviews, two of the main ones are manic panic, which I've seen a few reviews say that the color wouldn't show on their dark hair, and the other one , which ever single review on the site for it was a lousy one, all said the product sucked, it was runny and it made their hair very very stiff and crackly, and that was komb in dyes.

I haven;t seen to many reviews for the hairspray kind, but I really don't wanna pay a small fortune to get a few colors of manic panic, and find out it won't show up in my dark brown with red and gold highlight hair.

I have black hair and manic panic will only show if I bleach the areas I want dyed.

Well that puts that dye out then, cause I'm not bleeching my hair.

I take great pride that I treat my hair kindly and have never bleached it or peroxided it or permed it* outside the one or two times my mom got it done as a kid to my hair*  or put harsh  beauty chemicals in it, and I'm not going to start now, just cause I'd like to have purple stripes in my hair for 3 or 4 days.

If you just want it for a few days, I would recommend clip on weaves (hope that is the right word for it) but dark hair is not easy to colour and you just can' go lighter without peroxide...

Then you should just try those spray colors

LadyConstanze, that might have to be what I end up doing. I want to put my hair in pig tails then streak the  strands of the pig tails, or I want to put them into pig tails streak certain strands then braid so my braid is purple and blue or something.

All hair dye is temporary.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Has any one had temporary hair dyes not work on their dark hair? (11/1/2008 2:11:18 PM)

Actually theres boxes that say permenant, and they claim to last up to 6 weeks.

You do eventually have to redye yes, but in this case temporary means to me it'd last like a week then be totaly gone after a few washes, not something like takes 6 weeks to go away lol. And besides that's even pertinant to the question, the question was did they work on users dark hair. since I myself have dark hair.

I'd contact trading standards if I were you; sounds like false advertising to me. Six weeks isn't permanent now. Besides the amount of hair that falls out it can’t ever be.
I demand they call it from now on "Long lasting colour."

My daughter has used manic panic and it didn't work very well.  She is always changing her base color, and at the time it was a medium brown on top of which she attempted to get lime green highlights using Manic Panic.  The color in the jar was an extremely vivid bright green, but it turned out more like a soft light green and unfortunately turned into a yellowish color within a day or so.  The way you're really supposed to do it is to bleach the color out of your hair, then apply the new color to the bleached hair.

The hair-spray kind works very nicely and shows up easily even against very dark hair.  Plus it washes right out if you don't like it or if you want to try something different the next day.  But be careful of the over-spray when you're doing it.  It can stain countertops and sinks.  It's best to do it outside with an old towel wrapped around your shoulders so as not to stain your clothing.

my mom dyes her hair all the time and her hair does not fall out from dying. Of course it's not as nice and silky and healthy as it could be if she simply left it alone, but it doesn't fall out.

I could even buy a cheap wig that's a funky color I guess, or human hair extensions an dye those.

All hair falls out dyed or otherwise. Blocked sink etc. at any one time up to a quarter of all hair follicles are dormant or something like that.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Has any one had temporary hair dyes not work on their dark hair? (11/1/2008 2:25:16 PM)

that's true, I thought you ment hair fell out because of the dye, and while you were dying it.

I call it shedding though lol and I shed a lot.

Then when you wanted certain parts and not everything you could just section it off protect everything else not to be dyed then spray the sections right?

Exactly.  You can do stripes or sections, or just do your bangs, or the ends of your ponytails or whatever.

all salons offer temporary and permanent hair color.  permanent meaning 4-8 weeks.
temporary is a couple of days.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Has any one had temporary hair dyes not work on their dark hair? (11/1/2008 4:07:43 PM)

yes, but I don't want to go to a salon, I want to buy a can or two of the stuff and do it at home.

Well if I liked the spray in, I may go to a salon and have it done again, provided they don't need to bleach my hair, and it's not super expensive.

RainydayNE -> RE: Has any one had temporary hair dyes not work on their dark hair? (11/2/2008 10:54:28 AM)

yeah if your hair is dark, with certain colors the only way to get something vibrant is to bleach.
walgreens has coloring that's suppoooosedly made jsut for dark hair and will show up without bleach, but i've never tried it. it's always in fucias and reds and i haven't had a desire to put those colors in my hair =p
but even with manic panic, the red families tend to show up better as a bit of a "highlight" when applied to unbleached dyed hair. you can see some photos of that in the pictures in their gallery (atleast last time i looked you coulc)
colors like green or blue pretty much require some lightening.

the spray in colors can be fun because you can definitely wash them right out, so you can change it up however much you want =p and especially around halloween, you can find all sorts of fun colors fairly easily and cheaply
