candystripper -> Will McCain Be Debt-Ridden After the Election? (11/1/2008 3:53:04 PM)

Here in Ohio, McCain is constantly contacting me by email, by mail, by television ads, etc.  All this stuff's expensive as hell.  I am beginning to wonder what sort of debt his campaign is carrying now.

The NY Times reported Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful campaign was carrying about $10 million in debt at the end.  I couldn't find anything indicating what has happened since, but the article does seem to indicate that the debt can be difficult for the candidate personally to escape.

I think it would be sad if McCain went out like that; 72 years old and burdened with massive debt.  If it happens, I hope those of you who've been such staunch supporters of his will contribute after the election towards the reduction of his debt out of deference to the man you say you admire.

I'm not quite as concerned about Obama's potential debt load.  At 47, he presumably has many years of earning power left.

Cindy McCain has many assets, don't worry about John.

He also has his $58,358 annual war pension, no?

Lots of McCain liabilities too (from June 2008)

Cindy McCain's net worth is estimated to be around $100 million dollars. I don't think he's going to have to eat mac n cheese any time soon .. unless.. she divorces him or something. They do have a pre-nup in place.

Hillary lost the primary too.  Big difference between the primaries and the election.  The DNC didn't pay for Hillary's primary bid; they do pay for Obama's campaign.  The RNC picks up the tab for most of what you're describing for McCain.

They throw parties and post-election fundraisers to pay off the debts.

They`ll all be just fine.

Mrs. McCain's income in 2006 was about $6.0 million.  In 2007 the income fell to about $4.2 million.

candystripper -> RE: Will McCain Be Debt-Ridden After the Election? (11/1/2008 4:56:42 PM)

That's not my understanding, slaveboy.  Whoever is paying is, as a matter of law, supposed to be disclosed in the ad (how this is done in the context of robo-calls, etc., I'm not certain).  I've seen the 'what if' ad the RNP is running against Obama, but not often.  Most of what I see here has the tag line 'McCain for President Campaign'.

Cindy has assets of $100 million????  How the hell did that happen?  Is she a DuPont or something?  I had no idea McCain's wife was so wealthy.  I wonder why Obama hasn't made an issue of it?

Well, it may be unnecessary hand-wringing then, unless Cindy does not want to pay off his debts.  The best I could do online was to find a story in the Washington Post in which McCain's campaign reported had a bebt of about $20 million as of August 2008.

What debt has the campaign accumulated since August?  I have no clue what television ads costs, but there certainly have been a flurry of them, and other expensive tactics have been used as well.  If his debt ends up being $50 or $60 million, I can imagine a woman saying, nope, not gonna bail you out.

She inherited a beer distributorship in 2000.  She got about $100 million and her half sister got $10,000.  I would love to know the history about that.  Was her sister a democrat?

He needs to get elected so he can cut her taxes.

And not just any old distributorship, she has the only AB distributorship with a virtual monopoly in her market. Not bad...there are apparently alot of Joe and Jane six-packs in the Pheonix area

"She got about $100 million and her half sister got $10,000.  I would love to know the history about that."

Damn - now I too am wondering what her half-sister did to get screwed like that.

When my father cacked he actually had it in his will: "To my 3 children, J, D, & P, I leave the sum of $1 each."  His 2nd wife got it all.  And you thought that only happened in mystery novels...

That x-mas I went to my bank and got 3 singles, each with a serial # that ended in our respective ages at the time.  I had them  framed and gave 1 to my sister & brother.  Mine hangs on the wall next to the kitchen.

How does someone get "screwed" in inheritance?  Unless someone thinks they have a claim to another's hard work and money?  Or a weird sense of entitlement that makes you think you deserve what isn't yours to begin with.

slvemike4u -> RE: Will McCain Be Debt-Ridden After the Election? (11/1/2008 6:18:52 PM)

Well Katy, when your sister gets the only AB distributorship in the greater Pheonix/Tempe area....as in the only major metropolitan area served by one and one only AB dist......and you got 10,000 dollars...yup,you got screwed.

candystripper -> RE: Will McCain Be Debt-Ridden After the Election? (11/1/2008 6:24:09 PM)

O I dunno if I agree with you there, KatyLied.  It is one thing to leave behind an estate worth $25k and cut your UMs out in favor of a second wife; it's something else to make one UM a wildly wealthy individual and impoverish the other.

On balance, I'm not in favor of unevenness in wills anyway.  On occasion I have refused to accept a client who wanted to 'punish' a UM or leave all his assets to someone he'd only been married to a short time, rather than his UMs.

I mean, it's one thing to leave everything to the local animal shelter; but to draft a will designed to drive home a big ole 'f**k you' to someone is quite another matter.  It's hateful, and I wouldn't do it.

LOL, and Merc thinks lawyers will do anything for money.

Father's daughter...as is Cindy...the girls had different mothers.Cindy often describes herself as an only child, completely denying the half-sisters existence.
Meanwhile on  another thread here at CM some folks are trying to make hay of Obama's aunt living in sub-standard public housing....interesting stuff....huh!....Barack he Vote....vote early, vote often!

KatyLied -> RE: Will McCain Be Debt-Ridden After the Election? (11/1/2008 6:33:13 PM)

In my opinion a person's money, assets, wealth, etc are his/hers to give away as he/she pleases, because after all it is his/her money.  I don't think there is any obligation to leave it to anyone.
