I'm watching an episode of NOVA on my local PBS channel.  It's called "Hunting the Hidden Dimension" and it's about fractals and how they are being used in everything from cardiology to cell phone antennas.  They just explained how E=M^3/4 requires the use of fractal branching in living tissue in order to have both large and small animals, trees, etc.  Natural Selection at it's finest!  Freakin' awesome!

I can't encourage you enough to find this program, either on your cable/satellite or online and watch it at least once!  It will change the way you look at the world around you.  I'm so glad I DVR'd it - I think I'll watch it again right now!

While I've been watching, I downloaded ChaosPro, a fractal image generator, from http://www.chaospro.de/
Loads of fun :)

That's pretty pedestrian stuff.
Wait till he discovers nano-technology.

Been into fractals for 10+ years but this show really brought it all together and made connections I hadn't seen before.  Not sure if it's evidence of God or evidence that there is no God.

Carbon fiber nano tubes are what it's all about, man...

I'm trying something new: less snark, more awe.

nothing is quite as satisfying as having .....blown.    just sayn

Been there for two decades.Welcome.

Fractals are part and parcel of the big picture, just because they are. The thing to realize now is that they always have been. Consider the branches on a tree, or the veinous patterns on your own arm. It's all the same thing. Nobody ever said the process was without influence, but the basis of it all is still the same thing.

ya know- our age group is at a unique advantage in the teck age.   we remember how it was before teck =-but can still use teck, but will know when it is bad.  people born on the net wont.

on robo calls-  picture this. a tv commercial that YOU need to know- turns on you Tv for you so you get that message.

you wish to exit your home.  the biometric wont release the door until a message tailored for YOU is listened to. (insert minor taser if using wrong door)

not so far fetched.   drunks now must blow into the air tube to start the car, but next you wont be able to place the car into drive until you listen to the special message,  oh and fill in the spam code to release into park.

our entire world is about to become a voice menu.

but only those of us olod enough to have gone to high school w/o the internet will know it- the youth will "obey" , surrender to it.
( or outsmart it)

ads now on gas pumps and shopping carts- but why should they be placed into run mode UNTIL you heard the message and responded by  telling it a code that can only be known if you LISTEN.  hey "they", as in "machines" have rights too.  gag,

Yea, I think there's some bad shit being 'invented' too, pahunkboy.  I despised video games on sight, back in the day when men would crowd around a huge Pac-Man arcade machine.  I love pinball and was pretty good at it once, but something essential is missing from a video game.  I think it puts the user in a weird headspace and people are someday going to realise they've allowed their UMs to be injured by these devices.

Then there's the new Wii (sp?) influx of devices that apparently allow the user to have the 'experience of playing an instrument'.  I have no issue with 'air guitar', but simulateling the experience of playing an instrument without having to first master it?  This seems sinster to me...where will we find another Jimi Hendrix in 30 years if young people are diverted from mastering instruments because they no longer 'have to'?

I'm not entirely pleased by the advent of myspace, etc.. It seems UMs have no clue what it may mean to their future someday to have posted revealing photos of themselves, etc. on the 'net.  I think these 'online communities' should have been somehow prevented from allowing anyone under 21 on, and should have refused to upload these photos, but for many UMs, the horse has long since left the barn.

No, not everything on offer in the wild, wild world of new technology is met by me with open arms.

Hi Candy, in an intel report- the military is preparing FOR the event of machines out of control.   they now have drones and machine that can chase a man. the military also is close to erasing a memory- at least in mice.

so- we tho are blessed as we in-nately know what the world IS NOT.   we were here when TI 99s and IBM 386 came home to live.    we know what a phone cradle modem is.

anyhow- i guess there are plusses and minuses.

Man, I really hope it doesn't become that automated. I can't even stand those automatically flushing toilets.

oh i use to watch nova all the time when i was little.

One of the coolest things I saw in that show was an actual practical application for fractals: there's a fractal-shaped antnna in your cell phone that allows it use more than 1 frequency at teh same time.  Very cool...
