This year I am starting a fairly ambitious tattoo design. Its almost a full back design and is going to take several sittings. There is a central motiff that I actually want done as a cutting rather than a tattoo .. and then also build other points of scarification into the design as it develops.

Anyone with any experience of
  • art based cuttings (rather than just cutting as part of knife play)
  • healing process
  • time cuttings themselves take to do
  • colouring the wounds with ink
  • "salting" wounds
  • people who keloid as they heal and how this has effected their scars from a cutting

and anything else people have to add to the conversation

I'd suggest a long chat with DK...  my guess would be He'd know everything and be more than willing to share the knowledge/advive.

I should imagine you've already thought of that though.

See you at CMunch in a fortnight?

You know softness,  I remember my cutting hurting very badly, but it turns out that I had an allergic reaction to the adhesive on the bandaid.  The pain I felt was the adhesive burning into my skin.  The cutting never took (no scar) but for a long time I had the perfect shape of a bandaid  (complete with air holes) burned on my ass.  Sorry I wasn't any more help.

You can try to ask him.

yarp, yarp and yarp .. having a quick e-discussion about it now

am almost temnpted to involve DK in the doing of it .... I imagine I have a couple of things that might tempt Him to trade a little of his time.

Given that I believe it is a pasion of His, I am not sure He would need much persuading to be willing, but, given the busy-ness of Him, it could be a more logistical challenge.

How much it scars is going to be based on your own body's keyloiding. You can work to have it scar more by keeping it irritated as long as you can stand. Scrubbing the scabs off...and using hydrogen peroxide liberally (which actually kills the edges of the skin) help

The areas that are most likely to scar are those that are deep or where corners meet. Remember that scars spread, so something tiny and very detailed might end up with results that are less that you imagined it would be if you keyloid a lot. If you're average, you could end up with nice crisp lines. If you want to put ink into it, I've heard that tattoo ink is best, but I've never done it. Salting the would is usually just for the added sting, from what I understand, but I could be wrong.

If you want to guarantee it will scar, you can make each line a 'v' into the skin, removing a small strip of skin to create the line. This can really be a delicate thing, though, and I wouldn't recommend any but a very proficient cutting expert to do it.

This is pretty much the bulk of my knowledge about the process, except how to do the cutting itself.

Master and I Love cutting. He's done it on several local subs as well.  We've been asked to do a group presentation as well in our local community. I love to be cut by him, it's very personal and special. When done right it doesn't hardly hurt at all. i suggest a scalpel, both for comfort and for sterility. they're cheap and usually available at medical supply stores. A #10 is a common and easy to use size. Because there's blade on the curve, you just gently set the blade on the skin, then begin "drawing" with it. Hardly any pressure is needed to break the skin, and because youdon't have a point to shove in to break the skin (knife or razor blade) you don't have the initial stab and drag feeling. Also, this does not leave permanent marks on most people, though people who are very pale or very dark, will often have a hint of the lines if you look really hard.

For scarification, most artists will draw on each side of the design, then "peel" the middle strip of flesh off. this leaves a wide mark and will scar much more. This is something that hurts and I strongly suggest you go to a scarification artist for it, because if you dig one area deeper than another, it will scar heavier, also if the lines aren't done very straight, the lines will wiggle when healed.

so those are just a few of my thoughts, personally.

A few years ago I saw a beautiful scarification at a play party and asked, apparently they used wood ash (can't remember which tree it was) for the colouring, the added bonus is the ash also seems to be a natural antiseptic, the guy was quite specific that you can't use any wood ash for it but I honestly can't remember anymore, maybe you can google it?

I'm actually doing the very first permanent scarification on my daughter for the holidays--she wears a stylized butterfly on her cheek, that she wants to duplicate on both ankles (It's the logo for her fashion/photography/body-mod company). We cut it once, and we're preparing to do the 2nd cutting on one ankle (she doesn't scar easily, and we found the best way to get her to scar was to cut, let it heal, then re-cut over the old scars... and if it's like the test we did, she'll need a 3rd cutting in the same spot about 30 days after the 2nd. It worked well for her -- there was minimal spread with that method. The first cutting laid the thickest scars, and the subsequent cuttings stayed within the boundaries established during that first cutting.
