This is hardly new ground---Hermann Hesse especially examined the issue in depth in "The Glass Bead Game"--but why does the ridiculous warning "he/she is from the elite" persist in politics?

So we only want dumb people?

It's especially ridiculous when the charge comes from politicians who have inherited their place in society.

JustDarkness -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:09:53 PM)

Overhere we have an '" elite". Counts, princes etc etc. SOme work hard for their heritage..soem just enjoy mom and dads money.
Just a few really go in politics.
Heritage doesn't make you dum or smart though...not even when elite. Money though..can make you look smart.

pahunkboy -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:09:53 PM)

that  term works for the left and the right.   it means people in power.   now a measure of IQ.

kittinSol -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:11:06 PM)

It's called populism: pander to the lowest common denominator and people feel included. In elections, it works, unfortunately.

Lordandmaster -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:11:47 PM)

Yeah, like George W. Bush and John McCain III weren't born into the elite...

I don't know what makes me more nauseous, right-wing political bullshit--or the fact that most American seem to swallow it hook line and sinker.

Both are revolting: but what's surprising to me is how people don't learn from history. Is it because they don't know history?

Musicmystery -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:18:33 PM)

My college students often don't know the difference between the U.S. Civil War and the 1960s Civil Rights struggle. I am NOT exaggerating.

By the way, LBJ was the LAST president to win a majority of white male votes.

Carter was the last president to win a majority of the overall popular vote (in 1976).

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:20:51 PM)

I think George Bush is a clone of the older George Bush he looks exactly the same. Therefore he is either a clone or there has been some serious inbreeding going on IMSO. The funny thing is they think they got rid of the royal family in America.[:D]

Musicmystery -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:21:45 PM)

The older Bush was a warmonger without vision---but much, much smarter.

kittinSol -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:22:02 PM)

Make sure the masses remain ignorant and uneducated so that they're easily manipulated and lied to with populist crap. There is not interest in educating the majority of school students properly: the ones that rise above the fray and are pretty much designated at birth. The others can watch Fox News and swallow it all.

Musicmystery -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:23:27 PM)

And this is what I chuckle about when I read the "Marxist" attacks----as Marx noted "Religion is the opiate of the masses."

Just tell everybody live has easy answers, and all will be well.

Morning in America.

You don't think it might have something to do with being his son? You might find this odd, but often a son grows up to look like his dad. No inbreeding necessary.

That is possible I suppose. Why is it someone always has to spoil my conspiracy theories with reality.

I think people liked the second Bush at first because of the familiarity he has to the first Bush.

Finally I would say that some countries have learnt how to clone animals and others have cloned harmless sheep.

It is the political tradition of this country.  In the ideal, ours is a government that eschews aristocracy in favor of meritocracy.

Yeah right.

came4U -> RE: The Role of the Elite (11/2/2008 12:32:09 PM)

The illuminati is watching.

Yet, they don't need to view a kink site, they have far more valuable resources (real slaves) that pay their tabs which absorbs their time and energy.

The elite is nothing more than a cliche for someone better or richer than any one of us.

However, the charge is just as frequently applied to those that earned their place as to those that inherited.
