Hey everyone, I was reading through some of my old personal blog posts and thought I'd share something I wrote back in July. I thought it would be an interesting question to pose to the forum, since many of you are pretty experienced and well informed.

Here goes ...

So I looked up Merriam-Webster's definition of Dominant and Submissive. Here is the common theme in most definitions of the word, Dominant (as an adjective) it means:
1. exercising influence or control; 2. Most prominent, as in position; ascendant. 3. ruling, governing, or controlling; having or exerting authority or influence
Here is the common theme in most definitions of the word, submissive:
1.inclined or ready to submit; unresistingly or humbly obedient 2. inclined or willing to submit to orders or wishes of others or showing such inclination 3. Inclined or ready to submit; acknowledging one's inferiority; yielding; obedient; humble.
I thought it was interesting, to say the least. What do you see between the lines of these standard definitions?
Is a male Dom superior over women or is a Femdom superior over men? Whose inferior, the individual that is submitting or the one that feels dominant over them? Is it that both male and female, Dom and sub are truly the superior and they are fighting for status as King or Queen of the jungle? Is that why both, Dom and sub (alike), like those who are more resistant to the roles?

I am Dominant that is my nature. I own a malesub, he is submissive to me. I do not want nor need to dominate anyone else nor do I want to be Queen of the jungle. I am Queen of my castle and I own my own business that is good enough for me.

I think those that resist their roles need to do some soul searching to make sure that the "role" that they have chosen is truly the one that fits.

He doesn't want to be king of the jungle, just king of his own castle. Someone who wants to be king of the jungle is someone with insecurities, imo. I find it telling when a person is never satisfied, is never content. Since I've worked hard to learn to be happy, I'm not interested in someone who isn't capable of that.

Sometimes I am not sure if I am a Dominant..or that people just see me as one
(and on other days...the other way around )

The two men that I have a D/s relationship with are, at the end of the day, nicely normal ‘guys’, with flaws and quirks which are balanced out by some pretty interesting and likeable facets. The reality is that they are “superior” dominants in my opinion, while I am a “superior” submissive in their estimation.
What I owe them is to be responsible for what I have agreed to do.  My role is clearly defined and that role is just as important to the relationship as theirs.
As I like to say, without someone to submit to them, they are simply men sitting in a chair.  Without someone to dominate me, I just look silly down on the floor.

The only portion of the definitions i have an issue with is "acknowledging one's inferiority".  Although i am submissive to Master, i don't see myself as inferior to Him.  Much less do I acknowledge and admit that -  it just rubbed me the wrong way.  But then again, it IS Monday and i woke up ornery.

This male dominant rules over his female slave.  That's about as far as I care to take this train of thought.

Nah, just someone with an unresolved Tarzan/Jane fantasy......(come to think of it, that does sound like fun....[:D])

numbers.  which, when this slave was taught to read a dictionary, indicate slightly different or completely alternative meanings.

for example:
submissive:
1.inclined or ready to submit; unresistingly or humbly obedient

OR  2. inclined or willing to submit to orders or wishes of others or showing such inclination
OR 3. Inclined or ready to submit; acknowledging one's inferiority; yielding; obedient; humble.

submissive, even according to the dictionary definition that you provided, does not NECESSARILY mean "inferior"...it is just one option, among the 3 in Merriam-Webster's explanation.

I don't see the same thing between the lines of these definitions that you do.  I see two halves of a whole.  I see nothing about gender, nothing about the number of people involved, nothing about resistance.

It often takes much more strength to follow an order than to give one - especially to do it with a good attitude when it is something you really would prefer not to be doing.  It takes a lot of work and foresight to be an effective Dominant.  Neither is inherently better than the other; they will both have things that they are better at and hopefully complementary to each other.  I love reading between the lines, but all I see here is that each party needs the other.

Thank you, all, for the responses.

I am superior to no one!  Submission to me is not inferior.  I rule nothing but my own household.  However, whatever is defined, in my house and life I am who I am and don't need a box.
