the laptop is becoming a TV, phone, morphing.  What features do I want?  I dont really want to spend the money, but I m considering it.  below is a sight where one can learn.

Recently I grabbed a bunch of good pdfs.

How far does wireless N carry?

Is linux any good?

What size screen?

is XP obsolete?

I asked others, I looked around.  I figure $400-$700.   On the one hand a $400 model only has to last 1/2 as long - when measured up to the $700.

Battery longest looked like 3 hours.

I thought about selling one of the 2 I now own to put that $ to the new one.   With the ecomony bad and stores likely to go out of business maybe I should wait.  the old laptop is too slow.  im down to just 2 computers. that work. (from 5)
the t23 costs maybe$140 to upgrade the RAM.  (must be rare) and yet if I spend near $300 on upgrade, I could get a new linux.

???

wireless N has only use when your router supports it too
(sender and reciever should support it)
|How far it reaches depends on the house...walls etc.
With the right antenna's it should be able to reach with in a whole house and outise with easy. Think 50meter or so.
That is from experience,

linux is ok...but I think in general for non computer addicts you should get Macos or windows
best thing about Linux it is free...hardly games...and most of the well known software is windows only

xp is not yet obselete

go for dualcore processor at least, 64bits processor and 4 gig.  (fow Vista or Windows 7 in the future, next year)

Yea, we're looking at getting one for the UM here and have a lot of the same questions.  My techy friends have told me it's all about processor speed and RAM -- that there's no particular brand name to buy or avoid anymore.

Is a Mac really fully compatible with a PC?

What's that new HP laptop feature 'touch' really do?  Does it replace the mouse?  The keyboard?

I'm surprised battery length stalled at just 3 hours...why'd that happen?

And I thought if you had a thingy-doodle from ATT in your laptop, you could get the 'net anywhere on earth now  -- am I wrong?

Candy, I've got Verizon rather than ATT but yes, anywhere my cell phone works, I have internet.

Also, if you have a slow computer and want to see if you can upgrade it to make it faster.......go to Crucial.com. They are inexpensive and easy to shop with.

I just got a dell that is 2 month old, still under warranty and it is legit. Traded it to somebody that wanted a big screen tv.

I'm selling it for 400.00 that's what I got in it(well, traded it for equivalent stuff, anyway) currently it is selling for 550.00ish on dells website. I can post the stats and pic if you like. Like I said its only 2 months into warranty, so you would almost be getting a new computer. I know it has the extended cell battery pack and a 200ish gig harddrive, I think it has 2 or 3 gigs of ram, I'd have to look up the rest of the stats.

The reason I traded for it, was because if I didn't find a buyer I'd just keep it to replace my current laptop.

Hi Just,  for the house the 801.11b or g or whatever it is seems fine.  I was thinking tho for travel.

so 4 gig is something you would want?

it is annoyoing to have the computer slow down when too many aps.  this t23 only has 256 ram.  yikes.

the features are sorta confusing.

Certainly I can live with out some.  OH- I am very hard on a computer.  No one has fried more hard drives in this town them me. :-)  whoooooooooopz.

I spilled a glass of water on the other t23, so now that doesnt work.  I tried to add a 2nd hard drive to the desk top, so now that is broke.    a 4 laptop the battery is too old to work.  some dude buildt that unit. so parts are not discernible.

It seems like every progam thse days   has a message center... yikes.   so figure to have a video running -streaming, reading a pdf, and possibly more would be nice.  i seen one can buy a blue tooth plug in adaptor-  hmm

Hi

for the future you would want 4 gig...and a 64bit processor for sure.
MOstt hings come out in 64bits anyway. Improves calculations of heavy things a lott...including Vista
(not sure what you gonna connect more to it...but check for driver support)

You might want to look into the video part also..if you want to watch HD content.

Bluetooth support is often already build into a laptop. Else you always can get one of those usb ones. They cost not even 10 dollars.

i don't think they are making computers with anything other than 802.11n at this point.

you may not need it but it's backward compatible, meaning if your router is g, it will work as a g card would.

n works a lot better than g when you have 2 stories or concrete walls, otherwise you don't really need the power of n.

but again, if it comes with it, why complain?

Over priced for what they are. My little Dell does just fine for much much less.

MacAir is really light weight, but not that sturdy. My teen finally wormed a MacBook out of me, his battery lasts five hours. He can go to virus ridden sites and download video without any fear of a virus. Me? With a windowsxp I pick them up just by following a link. Took an hour yesterday to rid it of some nasty. But the MacBook is not cheap.

I see Samsung will have new stuff out next year.   South korea is suppose to have teck that would dazzle us.   Compact and all in one.    Im the proud owner of cassettes.  I went from LPs to 8-track tapes - then I stopped at cassette tapes.
I never ever bought a CD, DVD.

But I was early to get online, satilite tv.

http://www.tigerdirect.com   probaly is where I would purchase from- a re-cert unit.  I bought items from them, and I appreciate their return policy.

Im online alot- so in a way I should upgrade.  I asked some friends but they mention features that are... well old.   I dont need  a finger print scanned,  OHHHH- when i get up i often upset the laptop onto the floor- i broke 2 usb mem sticks this way. (injuries to my body---)

You couldn't GIVE me a laptop.  I can't quit get what the deal is with portability.  I have an office where I use my computer.  I don't happen to WANT to use it at the beach, for Gawd's sake.

I hate laptop screens and all their mouses are sucky.

Am I the only one left who still feels like this?  Is the desktop going the way of the buggy  whip someday?  i suggested to the UM that she might want to buy a desktop to get more for her money -- she looked at me like I was suggesting she get a typewriter, LOL.

During the worst of my pain per injuries, 20 hours a day in bed, I used web tv. It was great to be online.

Now my health is better- but I still re-position myself often.  I had both for a while.  But now that my desktop has broke- I think I only want a lap top.    I can bring it upstairs, downstairs. I have a big house and depending on weather, my mood and the traffic for the busy street, I like to pick up and go to the next room easily.  I dont leave the house with it.

Also- the desk top fan is sorta loud.

OHHHH.  My screaming parrot wont let me in his line of site with out screaming like he is on fire.  So- especially then I can go up stairs.   He is abit better since I been training him...but still- if I am awake he expects me to coo and swoon over him ......

I did not like the lap top at 1st.  as I have carpal tunnel too. ....a better touch pad sounds good.

I cancelled my Tv for the summer and I thought ild renew it this fall - but I dont think it is worth $63 a month..and especially since I can watch vids on the net.

I am going to go and browse in person before I buy. maybe 17 in screen is good. I think I have 14 now.  8 is not acceptable.

I have a Mac. For the 9 years since I dropped Windows, I haven't had a virus, system crash, blue screen of death, hack, etc. When I turn it on it works. I game on it, write on it, blog on it, and do graphics work on it. My daughter just got one. My mate now has one as well. My stepdaughter still has a Windows box. Hers crashes weekly, and the internet drops on a whim, when the rest of us are happily cruising away. Yes, it's more expensive, but when I wanted to upgrade our last 2 Macs, minor upgrades made them perfectly suitable for friends/family who needed a basic computer.

Despite 5 years as a techie for Windows and Nutscrape, I will never go back.

A buddy has mac.  he messed up and needs a part...but none of his freinds have it since we all have xp.

I went to best buy last night.   They must have had losses- reminds me of a liquor store or adult store.

Anyhow- I see that marketing is doing with Tvs and conputers what they have done with cars.  change the look so the current stuff is obsolete.  The makeover has little to do with performance breakthrus.

Im showing my age, but when a store plays the music loud, it is harder to concentrate.  I would have liked to have heard the unit- as in fan. I had one lap top that the fan was too loud.

Oh- on screen size.   13 or 14, but not 15.

The breakthru I liked was the gritty touch pad on toshiba.   That looked good.  as it seemd responsive.

I have not seen enough to impress me to part with cash.    i did not care for vista.

2 is a good number of comuters- maybe when thois one dies.   kinda funny how many salesman come up to- then dont know much about the units. the stock or the sales.  hiccup
