How was it the two of you were on the east coast, and I missed it?
With what I am sure is going to be an impressive guest list, I would tend to agree with you. Taking 42 from everyone would be a bit much, even for beth. Here's My idea instead. Have something of a lottery. Get yourself 42 tickets, in numerical order. Give those out as guests arrive. At some point during the evening, allow beth to know who among the guests has those tickets, but not in what order. Then, blindfold her. The person with ticket number one gives her a swat. If she can guess who it was, she can add or take away from the 42 spanks she knows she is going to get. If she's wrong, you give her an extra one as her Master.
Here's another one. It's a version of the alphabet game. Have her start naming off friends at the party, or even folks who are members here at CM alphabetically. For every one she gets right, she gets a clothespin. For everyone she misses, she gets a swat. One of the keys to this game is that there are no repeats, so if she comes up with folks who's names start with O, X, or Z, she can't use them again. Even with Beth's fortitude, I doubt much more than four trips through the alphabet will be needed.
